Savannah River Mission Completion Radiological Control Inspectors (Entry through Senior level) in Aiken, South Carolina

Overview

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Radiological Control Inspectors (Entry-level through Senior-level) to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).

The Radiological Control Inspectors perform simple or routine radiological protection functions. Under close supervision assists higher level Radiological Protection Inspectors (RPIs) in more complex tasks. Interprets and documents monitoring data and calculates exposure rates, worker dose estimates, airborne concentrations, and radioactive environmental releases. Attends classroom, on-the-job, and other assigned training.

The Entry Radiological Protection Inspector (grade R1) serves as the training position for Radiological Protection Inspector (grade R2) and Senior Radiological Protection Inspector (grade R3) positions.

Responsibilities

  • Works from site policies, procedures, textbooks, and training curriculum. Works under the direction of instructors while in the classroom (including mockup training) and from higher level RPIs, supervisors and technical leads while in the field.

  • Monitors Radiological Buffer Areas, Controlled Areas, Radioactive Material Areas, and non-controlled areas using appropriate portable contamination and radiation survey instruments *

  • Exercises Time-Outs or radiological stop-work authority, as needed, when radiological conditions have changed, or unforeseen hazards are encountered *

  • Source checks portable survey instruments upon receipt from Calibrations Facility and again after use, utilizing approved procedures *

  • Documents all survey and activity results *

  • Meets the physical requirements for the essential job duties, which may include being able to lift/handle 25 pounds, climbing, bending, twisting, exposure to extreme temperatures, wearing protective clothing/equipment (including respiratory) and meeting radiological control (RCI) requirements *

  • Conducts contamination and radiation surveys in Controlled Areas, Radiological Buffer Areas, Radioactive Material Areas, Radiation Areas, Contamination Areas, High Contamination Areas, Airborne Radioactivity Areas, and non-controlled areas using standard survey techniques with portable contamination and radiation monitoring equipment. Conducts independent job coverage in Radiological Buffer Areas and Radioactive Material Areas. *

  • Determines and updates area radiation exposure rates, contamination levels, and airborne radioactivity levels and post area with appropriate signs and barricades.

  • Operates counting room equipment utilizing approved procedures.

  • Audit personnel access into radiological controlled areas and follow-up on contamination incidents involving personnel and/or facilities.

  • Provides administrative support to include record keeping, filing, and updating procedure manuals. Examples include processing radiological work permit requests, issuing and controlling dosimetry inventory, radioactive source records, and completing forms and logs. *

  • Works any shift assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

* Essential Duties

*** Note: Although Contamination Area, High Contamination Area, Airborne Radioactivity Area, and Radiation Area surveys are part of this job description, these are not considered essential functions and must be performed with defined oversight from more experienced RPIs, supervisors and/or technical leads.

If participating in the radiological control inspector training program, demonstrates proficiency in the following:

  • Use of portable and fixed radiological monitoring equipment; calculating radiation exposure rates, dose, airborne contamination, and environmental releases; Establishing appropriate control measures for radiological conditions; determining appropriate monitoring dosimeters using Radiological Work Permits (RWP’s); determining appropriate protective clothing and equipment using RWPs; donning, doffing, and function of various types of protective clothing and equipment; demonstrating job coverage under stable radiological conditions in areas with radiological conditions <5 mrem/hr, <5Q Table 2-2 levels, and <0.1 DAC or <8 DAC-hr.

Note: There will be no independent job coverage in Contamination Areas, High Contamination Areas, Airborne Radioactivity Areas, Radiation Areas or High/Very High Radiation Areas

Experienced Applicants:

If qualified by experience or training as defined by the established job descriptions, candidates may be considered for Radiological Control Inspector (grade R2), or Senior Radiological Control Inspector (grade R3) levels.

Radiological Control Inspector (grade R2)independently performs workplace monitoring and job coverage in radiological areas with stable and well-defined conditions. Assists higher level Radiological Control Inspectors with workplace monitoring and job coverage as defined in this job description. This job serves as the training position for the Senior Radiological Inspector position. There are additional minimum requirements for experience and training. Senior Radiological Control Inspector (grade R3)provides full and independent workplace guidance and monitoring of all site activities involving radioactive materials. Interprets and documents monitoring data and calculates exposure rates, worker dose estimates, airborne concentrations and radioactive environmental releases. Qualifications

Qualification Requirements:

Must successfully complete an initial and ongoing training and qualification program for assigned tasks, including classroom and on-the-job training. Complete radiological protection training and receive a score of 80 or better on the classroom exam(s).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Test scores for Applied Math and/or Applied Technology from: ACT Work Keys Skills Assessment or WIN Ready to Work Credentials.

  • Associates degree in health physics or nuclear technology with Radiological Protection option; or

  • A certificate from an accredited college equivalent to an Associate’s degree as described above; or

  • Experience as a military nuclear engineering laboratory technician; or

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university; or

  • Three years on-the-job experience as a RPI

Starting Rate

USD $31.05/Hr.
