Who we’re looking for Toyota’s Integrated Vehicle Systems (IVS) Department is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Automated Driving Systems (ADS) Systems Development Engineer to join us in creating the future of mobility as we develop next-generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). If you’re a hands-on software design engineer with passion for next-generation technology and an interest in automotive, this role is for you!

This role requires software engineering skills with customer-focused thinking, partnership with internal and external teams at Toyota, and the ability to work iteratively. Flexibility and passion are a must. We pride ourselves on having fun while developing cool stuff. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the development of Toyota’s ADSs through system development, software development, and validation related to items such as recognition, mapping, localization, path planning, and vehicle control. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the person in this role will support the IVS department's objective to research, develop, validate, and implement innovative ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems) and ADS technologies.

What you’ll be doing

As a Software Design Engineer in our Advanced Driving Systems (ADS) area, you’ll bring our next-generation product to market. Here’s what you’ll be doing as a member of our team:

  • Developing System and Software Architecture for new ADAS features.

  • Develop Software: Use iterative processes to design algorithms and software using Python, C/C++, MATLAB/Simulink.

  • Provide data-driven proposals for new ADS and ADAS features, subsequently supported by software implementations of the proposed algorithms.

  • Develop a simulation environment (Hardware in the loop and/or Software in the loop) and integrate software testing processes and tools to facilitate automated testing. Analyze data with automated quantitative methods to enable visualized tracking of performance indicators for decision-making.

  • Drive prototype vehicles in simulated, closed track, and public road environments.

  • Identify customer needs for ADAS through data-driven assessments of technology, market, and social trends. Propose and develop innovative ADAS to commercialize high-value customer needs.

  • Facilitate daily communication with Japanese counterparts to align global activities and drive consensus building.

  • Summarize data logically to create easy-to-understand visualized reports for technical storytelling. Communicate proactively with stakeholders and management to build consensus.

  • Collaborate with different IVS groups to gather critical information or tasks to support production design and evaluation groups of future ADS features.

  • Form partnerships with stakeholders across the division to realize efficiencies through best practices in software engineering.

  • Ability to drive prototype test vehicles and gain necessary driver certifications.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, robotics, computer science, or equivalent.

  • Programming experience in C++ and C (3 years)

  • Experience with sensors, ECUs, and developing application software to facilitate testing in vehicles or simulated environments (such as HILS and SILS). (3 year)

  • Experience in testing, validating, and/or verifying embedded software. (3 yrs)

  • Experience with CAN (Controller Area Network) tools and troubleshooting (2 troubleshooting ().

  • Toyota vehicle development experience in design and/or evaluation (1 yr)

  • Experience in leading or collaborating on developing small/mid-scale software, electronic or mechanical control systems, from concept to actualization/production. (Yes/No, explain)

  • Experience in developing camera or sensor recognition of objects involving lane detection, pedestrian detection, stitching images, and use of algorithms such as Gaussian filters, Gradient calculation, Edge detection, etc. (2 years)

  • Experience in developing and using algorithms such as Kalman filters, Recursive Least Squares, and Least Mean Squares. (2 years)

  • Exposure to IS026262 Functional Safety concepts and applications to develop new systems. [Example: HARA, FSR, TSR] (Yes/No, explain)

  • Master of Science (or higher) in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical area.
