Northwest Community Hospital Radiology Support Associate - Radiology Registration in Arlington Heights, Illinois

Shift: Full time, Days, Weekend as needed, 40 hrs/week * *Shift hours: 6:00am - 2:30pm Reporting to the Director of Radiology/Imaging with accountability to the team facilitator and team, is responsible for creating patient files and monitoring and maintaining patient records in the Radiology Department. Retrieves records and reports as requested by internal and external medical personnel, physicians, patients, legal inquiries, and insurance companies. Releases medical records according to state and federal regulations and hospital and departmental policy. 1. Prepares and maintains complete, accurate patient examination records including film, requisitions, and exam reports; receives x-ray films from physician offices and hospital departments; files patients' films in proper folder; communicates radiologist preliminary interpretation on outside of film jacket; maintains patient film jackets in numerical order in the fileroom. 2. Assists the radiologist by responding to various requests addressing all aspects of radiology records, including patient history, follow-up reports, and charge discrepancies; maintains museum file information. 3. Responds to walk-in and phone inquiries for radiology records and reports from internal and external medical personnel, physicians, patients, and insurance companies; assists physicians in locating diagnostic films and reports; pulls records for patients as requested; deciphers physicians orders and diagnosis as requested; performs diagnostic imaging film copying procedures; retrieves patient computer records to obtain requested information as needed. Confirms film identification for patient name, type of imaging examination, and correct number of films. Prepares and mails patient records subpoenaed for court cases. 4. Sorts and distributes transcribed reports; safeguards confidentiality of records according to state and federal regulations and department/hospital policy. Confirms patient identification for record release according to proper procedure. 5. Receives STAT films and forwards to appropriate radiologists or deciphers radiologists interpretation and responds by phone to appropriate party. 6. Serves as a fileroom librarian; files returned examination records to appropriate patient files; maintains file of film records from other institutions. Mails films from outside facilities back to appropriate destination. 7. Tracks released films and reports to ensure that they can be located and are returned to the file room within 24 hours; ensures unread films are given to the appropriate radiologist for timely interpretation. Monitors the return of films from the Emergency Room, Surgery, nursing units, and physician offices; logs return date and files returned film in proper folders. 8. Assumes lead position as required in the absence of the Team Facilitator; assists with orientation of new employees. 9. Prepares films for patients scheduled for surgery; delivers films to Surgical Department. Prepares outpatient surgery films for pick-up. Prepares films requested for special exams, i.e. IVP, angiograms, tomograms, mammograms, etc. 10. Performs archival film purge per legal and departmental retention policy. 11. Promotes teamwork and good interpersonal relationships. 12. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures. 1. The level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of four years of high school . 2. Knowledge of medical terminology is desired at time of hire; must complete medical/radiology course within first year in position if not completed prior to hire. 3. The organizational skills necessary to maintain files in a timely and orderly manner and prioritize and perform a variety of detail-oriented tasks essential to department operations while handling multiple interruptions; must be flexible. 4. The interpersonal skills necessary to interact tactfully with hospital staff, patients, physicians, and insurance providers. 5. The analytical skills necessary to locate films and the mathematical ability to file numerically. 6. The ability to use a computer for the retrieval of data. 7. The ability to learn medical and radiology specific terminology. 8. The ability to use good judgment and maintain a high degree of confidentiality. 9. The ability to use a computer to perform the representative functions and competencies of the job as defined by the Radiology Department. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Moderate physical effort. Requires continuous standing or walking. Requires frequent lifting or moving of average weight material such as xray films in difficult work positions, i.e. bending and reaching to obtain files. Requires occasional lifting or moving heavy weight material. 2. Flow of work and character of duties requires part normal and part concentrated attention. WORKING CONDITIONS: 1. Conditions are acceptable. At least one disagreeable element or hazard, i.e. heavy x-ray films, is continuously present in the environment. Highly stressful environment at times due to the volume and urgency of requests.
