National Park Service Motor Vehicle Operator in Arlington, Virginia

Summary The purpose of the position is to operate one or more motor vehicles, which typically have an approximate gross weight of more than 32,000 pounds. This job announcement is open to receive applications from the first 75 applicants. The job announcement will remain open until either the quota of 75 applicants, or 10/27/2021 is reached. Responsibilities Operate gasoline or diesel powered heavy equipment. Operate motor vehicles/equipment up to 32,000 lbs capacity. Operate a front-end loader, trucks with snow plows, dump trucks, rubber tired backhoes, and steel faced roller up to two tons. Operate commercial vehicles on public roads. Transport material and personnel, remove snow and ice from roads. Operate trash packer to remove trash and debris. Assist with maintenance, repair and servicing of heavy equipment. Operate compressed air tools to perform road maintenance and repairs. Perform routine and preventive maintenance on tools and equipment. Perform semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance and repair and janitorial work in and on various buildings. Perform manual labor tasks such as cleaning drainage ditches, cleaning picnic sites and raking and graveling of trails. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license. You must possess and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Additional Information This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee. Physical Demands: The position requires moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on tractors to hook up service lines, lower landing gears, and in climbing on the trailer to load or tie down cargo. Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. As is the case at the lower grade levels, at the grade 8 level drivers operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
