About our opportunity:

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equity & Inclusion Manager in the Equity & Inclusion Department. The Equity & Inclusion Department plays a key role in moving the city organization toward successful advancement of equity within Asheville by understanding, analyzing, and eliminating the root causes of racial disparities and advancing equitable policies, practices, and procedures.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Supervising, directing, and evaluating assigned staff, including planning, directing, and reviewing their work.

  • Managing department activities using best practices of project management.

  • Developing and managing the department budget with an intermediate to advanced understanding of budgeting.

  • Supporting the oversight and management of the City’s Equity Action Plan, including progress reviews and reporting.

  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to promote the use of an equity lens in policy and program development.

  • Administering the Racial Healing Grant Program.

  • Managing Equity & Inclusion social media and communication networks with the community and groups.

  • Performing public relations and customer service functions, including attending and participating in meetings and delivering training and presentations.

  • Representing the department and City at various meetings.

    About you: We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Affairs, Business, Accounting, Management and Operations, or a related field.

  • Five (5) years of direct supervisory experience.

  • Four (4) years of experience in the field.

  • Five (5) years of state and/or local government experience preferred.

  • Certificate (or higher) in Project Management. preferred.

  • Certificate (or higher) in Equity & Inclusion or a related field preferred.

  • Organizational Development or Change Management experience preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license.

Other things to know:

  • Work Schedule: Generally Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with some attendance required at evening meetings of the Asheville City Council and related meetings. Limited hybrid options are available with approval of the Department Director.
