Summary

The Health, Safety & Environment Manager is responsible for ensuring Champion Petfoods’ occupational health, safety, and environmental culture. This position is responsible for recommending strategic direction and implement plans based on recent safety audit results, and will ensure that our policies and programs meet legislated requirements. Responsibilities will also include monitoring and training employees in health, safety, and environmental management best practices, assisting with hazard identification and the development of safe work procedures, identifying, developing and delivering safety training supplements, and providing day-to-day guidance and advice. The Manager, Health, Safety & Environment works out of our production facility in Auburn, Kentucky and reports to the Kitchen Manager.

Job Duties

  • Implement health, safety, and environmental practices, policies, and plans of the company.

  • Provide necessary training, leadership, organization and control to meet the company's health, safety, and environmental goals.

  • Accept full authority to take any necessary action to maintain overall safe practices and procedures, including the authority to cease an unsafe operating procedure.

  • Implement information flow and data publications to ensure each level of management is properly informed of all activities relative to compliance with company health, safety, and environmental policies and bulletins.

  • Ensure all equipment and buildings owned or operated by the company comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations, and any other applicable Provincial or Federal regulations, and communicate the same company-wide.

  • Instruct workers and monitor performance on health, safety, and ergonomic performance.

  • Observe equipment and property conditions for health and safety, and report discrepancies to the appropriate managers.

  • Orientation of new employees with regulatory health, safety, and environmental instruction.

  • Maintain required health, safety, and environmental training and documentation thereof for all employees company-wide.

  • Monitor and measure effectiveness of all safety programs and documentation required as part of compliance with regulatory requirements/code.

  • Develop and oversee a safety team from within the company, ensuring training is kept up-to-date and all team members remain compliant with occupational health and safety requirements.

  • Leading the Joint Worksite Health & Safety meetings, to take place monthly.

  • Develop manuals, policies, and procedures for health, safety, environmental, and OH&S training, to be reviewed with Human Resources to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and current policies, approved by the VP Operations, and then implemented.

  • Conduct accident investigations as necessary to assist with liability determination and causation, including resolution of open claims.

  • Manage relationships with Federal and State occupational health & safety regulatory bodies.

  • Involvement in Capital Project planning team.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • CHSC (Certified Health & Safety Consultant) designation, with 8 to 10 years’ experience in a Safety Consultant position; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in research, analysis, interpretation and implementation of safety regulations, standards, and best practices.

  • Understand and have complete knowledge of all Federal, state laws and regulations pertaining to safety codes and Occupational Health and Safety rules.

  • Direct experience assessing training needs, creating training materials to fulfill those needs, and then delivering the training.

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate with a variety of individuals.

  • Proficiency in presentation and communications technology, such as Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • Ability to maintain filing systems, databases, and basic diary/minutes management.

  • Self-directed, highly motivated, detail oriented, and able to work independently while providing leadership to a team.

  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to train, coach, evaluate, and improve others.

  • Motivated, energetic, goal-oriented, with a strong work ethic and positive team attitude.

  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.

Working Conditions

  • Work environment is in a pet food production facility office; the position works both in the office and production facility, with exposure to dust, noise, odors, and fluctuating temperatures.

  • Travel is required.

  • Ability to attend and conduct presentations.

  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.

  • Working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  • Overtime as required.

  • Ability to physically inspect company property and assets, in order to meet occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements.
