Visa Senior Associate Counsel in Austin, Texas
Visa is seeking a business and commercial lawyer with emerging company and/or venture-backed startup experience to join its growing legal team that supports Visa’s Intellectual Property, Global Product and Technology organizations. The position will report to Vice President, Visa Legal – Intellectual Property, Global Product and Technology. The role includes responsibility for supporting Visa’s early-stage company incubation activities, mergers and acquisitions activity, as well as a variety of products, services, and operational functions, either as the lead attorney or as part of a small team of experienced counsel. The attorney will work closely with other experienced lawyers and compliance professionals, and regularly engage with business clients. Applicants must be skilled at managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced and challenging, but highly rewarding, environment; have good judgment and strong analytical, client counseling, and negotiation skills; be self-motivated; and, most importantly, be an optimistic, curious, and collaborative team player. Primary Responsibilities Visa is looking for someone who will: § Work closely with business and technology teams to understand key business and technical objectives and to assist in business planning, licensing deals, strategic alliances, venture investing, and mergers and acquisitions. § Draft, negotiate, and drive to completion complex commercial agreements that achieve business objectives, and continue to support those business relationships once consummated § Provide sophisticated and creative counseling and advice to business and technology teams regarding product development, deployment, and associated commercial and contracting considerations, with a focus on intellectual property § Work closely with Visa’s regional and local legal and business teams globally, and assist these teams in resolving regional and local issues, including to achieve consistency on approaches and issues by Visa worldwide This is a hybrid position. Hybrid employees can alternate time between both remote and office. Employees in hybrid roles are expected to work from the office two days a week, Tuesdays and Wednesdays with a general guidepost of being in the office 50% of the time based on business needs. *Basic Qualifications* • 5 or more years of relevant work experience with a Bachelors Degree or at least 2 years of work experience with an Advanced degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or 0 years of work experience with a PhD *Preferred Qualifications* • 6 or more years of work experience with a Bachelors Degree or 4 or more years of relevant experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Masters, MBA, JD, MD) or up to 3 years of relevant experience with a PhD • Admitted to a state bar in good standing or registered, or eligible for registration, as in house counsel in the state of office location. • 5+ years of legal practice; combination of in-house and top-tier law firm experience preferred • Strong academic credentials, including a J.D. degree (or international equivalent) • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively as needed, and engage directly with business clients at all levels • Must be a practical and creative problem-solver with strong business acumen and work ethic • Must be able to manage and drive the legal and regulatory aspects of complex business initiatives, both in the U.S. and internationally • Must have experience drafting and negotiating technology-based commercial agreements • Strong preference for experience advising/counseling emerging companies or venture-backed startups Visa has adopted a COVID-19 vaccination policy to safeguard the health and well-being of our employees and visitors.
