Amazon Sr. System Dev Engineer, PES (Platform Engineering and Services) Database Engineering Team in Bellevue, Washington

Amazon Fulfillment Technology - PEAS (Platform Engineering and Services) Database Engineering Team is currently looking for a Senior System Development Engineer position for it’s Bellevue, WA office to design, develop and manage the persistence solutions that serve and support AFT needs. Senior SysDE engineer will be part of the worldwide operations and responsible for designing, managing and maintaining highly complex, confidential, mission critical and high availability databases in a dynamic and fast paced environment.

Key job responsibilities

  • Must have leadership experience developing automation software, spanning across multiple teams and multiple organizations.

  • Must have experience designing and building system-level software at scale, with an emphasis on durability, availability, security, and diagnostics.

  • Must have a strong understanding of OS internals, Databases, most notably storage subsystems in a Cloud and On-prem Systems.

  • Identify and implement process improvements which improve your team’s agility. This will include improvements to design, automation, development, test or operations.

  • Influences within your team and partner teams to help drive and develop the technical implementation for overall system designs

  • Desirable to have an understanding of AWS services, specifically, distributed storage systems and use of storage hardware

  • Define and/or refine system requirements, participate in the development and delivery of Interoperability-related features such as system health monitoring, diagnostics, repair, and other self-healing automation.

  • Must understand coding in the context of working in distributed systems and/or widely scaled web applications.

  • Must have experience hands on development of automation software in at least one modern language, such as Python, Ruby, Java, or others.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and an ability to communicate effectively

A day in the life

Lead the System Development (SysDE) effort to define and build software and enabling tools, according to defined Software development best practices;

Participating in the full lifecycle of day-to-day development activities, including prioritization, task breakdowns, writing design documents, design and code reviews, implementation, deployment, and operations.

Track and report progress. Ensure automation and tools deliver performance, reliability and operational health needed by the EC2, Databases, Monitoring Tools and S3 platforms.

Work closely with internal customers to identify early any potential problems with on-boarding new services into their ecosystem. Build, manage, and deploy pipelines for rapid deployment of new code.

PES Database Engineering Team is responsible for Engineering, Architecture, Scaling Solutions to Amazon Fulfillment Technologies (AFT), SCOT (Supply Chain Optimization Technologies), WWCR (WW Customer Returns), Gift Cards.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Bellevue, WA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of systems design, software development, operations, automation, and process improvement experience

  • 4+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 3+ years of programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby experience

  • 2+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 2+ years of systems development in an IT or data center environment experience

  • 2+ years of experience in executing multi-engineer, cross-team projects, and mentoring others on project management and prioritization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience writing technical documents, project plans and progress reports to leadership and to stakeholders

  • Experience hiring, developing and mentoring engineers

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience with distributed systems at scale

  • Experience taking a leading role in building complex software or computing infrastructure that has been successfully delivered to customers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
