Telecom Engineer
Purpose
Southern Company is looking for a skilled and experienced Telecommunications Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of our telecommunications infrastructure, with a focus on MPLS, routers, optical networks, Layer 2 and Layer 3 routing protocols, and SD-WAN. This role involves close collaboration with various technology groups within the company to ensure seamless integration and optimal performance of telecommunications systems.
Job Responsibilities
Design, implement, and optimize Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks.
Configure and manage routers to ensure efficient and secure data transmission.
Support the deployment and maintenance of optical network components, including DWDM, GPON and SONET systems.
Implement and manage Layer 2 and Layer 3 routing protocols (e.g., STP, OSPF, BGP) to ensure robust and efficient network operations.
Design and implement Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) solutions to enhance network performance and flexibility.
Collaborate with other technology groups, including IT, Network Operations, and Cybersecurity, to ensure seamless integration and performance of telecommunications systems.
Utilize network management tools to monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to maintain high availability and reliability.
Develop and maintain network documentation, including diagrams, procedures, and policies.
Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies to recommend improvements and innovations.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
Proven experience with MPLS, routers, and optical networks.
Strong understanding and experience with Layer 2 and Layer 3 routing protocols (e.g., STP, OSPF, BGP).
Experience with designing and implementing SD-WAN solutions.
Proficiency with network management tools for monitoring and troubleshooting.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Ability to work across different technology groups and collaborate effectively.
Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP) are a plus.
Additional Skills (preferred):
Experience with network security principles and practices.
Proficiency with scripting and automation tools.
Experience in a utility or energy company is an advantage.
Knowledge of Microwave Systems and LTE

Education / Experience
A BS degree in engineering or 4 year degree required.
