The Highways Drainage Lead at Principal Engineer/Associate grade is responsible for

  • Providing highways drainage advice for a wide range of infrastructure projects

  • Overseeing the integrated design of drainage on specific projects

  • Developing the capability of others in the design of highways drainage

  • Contributing to business development to secure new opportunities in the provision of drainage design

  • Providing Technical support to bids

YOUR TEAM

  • The Birmingham Highways Team forms part of WSP’s Transport and Infrastructure business. The team focus on the delivery of projects in the Midlands and Wales, as well as providing support to national major projects and programmes

  • Our major clients include National Highways, HS2 and many local authorities. We also have a leading role in design of highways and drainage infrastructure for nationally important projects such as Sizewell C Nuclear Power Station.

  • You can expect opportunities to deliver effective drainage infrastructure for highways both for large schemes, local improvements and associated with commercial and housing developments.

  • Reporting to a Technical Director you will lead a team of 4 technical experts providing advice and guidance in your area of expertise

  • Our recent successes include delivering a design to upgrade existing drainage and new drainage required for the regeneration of Perry Barr, a key enabling scheme for the Commonwealth Games. Our drainage designs for Sizewell have just received DCO consent.

  • You will have opportunities both to share and develop your expertise with the Birmingham team but also more widely through the WSP Drainage Technical Working Group

  • You will be based at the Birmingham Mailbox office. This is located close to Grand Central Station and the centre of Birmingham with a good range of local facilities, shops and cafés.

  • In this role you will have an opportunity to make a difference;

  • ensuring that the drainage of the future is fit for purpose

  • maximising use of Sustainable Drainage Systems

  • reducing current flood risk and pollution

  • inspiring the next generation of drainage engineers

  • Demonstrable expertise in highway drainage with application of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges, Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works and CIRIA C753 SUDS Manual

  • Membership of an appropriate Engineering Institution preferably at Chartered level

  • Good working knowledge of drainage for adoption and the Sewerage Section Guidance Manual would be beneficial
