The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. * * * *Water Quality Certification This program runs from June 2024- October 2024 The MassDEP Water Quality Certification program is guided by the Federal Clean Water Act Section 401 and the Massachusetts regulation 314 CMR 9.00. 314 CMR 9.00 is adopted pursuant to the Massachusetts Clean Waters Act and establishes procedures and criteria for the administration of Section 401 of the federal Clean Water Act, for the discharges of dredged or fill material, dredging, and dredged material disposal in waters of the United States within the Commonwealth. 314 CMR 9.00 implements and supplements 314 CMR 4.00, Massachusetts Surface Water Quality Standards by, without limitation, protecting the public health and restoring and maintaining the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the water resources of the Commonwealth by 1. Establishing requirements, standards, and procedures for monitoring and control of activities involving discharges of dredged or fill material, dredging, and dredged material disposal or placement; the evaluation of alternatives for dredging, discharges of dredged or fill material, and dredged material disposal or placement; and public involvement regarding dredging, discharges of dredged or fill material, and dredged material placement, reuse or disposal; 2. Establishing a certification program for the MassDEP to persons seeking to discharge dredged or fill material, conduct dredging, and place, reuse or dispose of dredged material, and preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. The incumbent may also have opportunities in reviewing activities in management of aquatic invasive species in MA lakes, rivers, and estuaries with chemical, physical, or biological control measures, such as the MassDEP WM04 Chemical Application License Program * The intern will assist WQC database development by collecting statewide data submitted by Water Quality Certification applicants to assess potential environmental impacts from proposed activities; * The intern will have assignment on Water Quality Certification management measures such as field site visit, data transferring, literature research and drafting preliminary reports; * The intern will be involved in producing GIS maps in order to better inform the general public and other agencies about the temporal and spatial variations of different projects associated with Water Quality Certification; * The intern may need to develop Chemical Treatment Projects database by collecting historical WM04 license information; * The intern may participate invasive species control activities such as reviewing project applications, site visits, or literature research. * The intern will have chance to interact with of MassDEP staff including MassDEP Commissioner and other interns.
