Examples of Work:

50% Performs maintenance, repairs and preventative maintenance operations on traffic signals, computerized signal controllers, video cameras, other signal equipment and ITS devices as required on a daily basis. Uses knowledge to troubleshoot programming issues of computerized traffic signal controllers and equipment. Assists higher level technicians in shop on callouts and projects.

10% Performs visual inspection of computerized traffic signal equipment, checking for safety defects and making estimates of repairs to determine if repairs are feasible.

10% Provides assistance on traffic signal construction projects and participates in final inspections concerning equipment and system acceptance.

5% Assist in maintaining an inventory of parts for immediate and emergency repairs

10% Performs programing on computerized traffic signal controllers and equipment with assistance from engineering staff. Performs data transfer of traffic signal timing databases using laptop, tablet or palm pilot. Assists in maintaining signal timing database on computer and TSI database in file cabinet.

10% Performs service and maintenance on vehicles assigned to gang.

5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including but not limited to emergency/disaster support activities.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in the maintenance or repair of mechanical or electronic office equipment, precision machinery, or electronic and electrical systems or in the installation, repair or maintenance of computer equipment or systems (hardware and/or software).

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in a vocational-technical school or military school will substitute for the experience on the basis of one year of training for one year of experience.

College training with at least six semester hours per year in electronics or computer science will substitute for the experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

CompTIA A+ Certification will substitute for one year of the required experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess an appropriate Federal Communications Commission (FCC) radio-telephone license when working with marine and aviation transmitting equipment or with radar.

May be required to have technician certification by the National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER).

May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment.

NOTE:

The maintenance or repair of electronic or electrical systems includes the repair or maintenance of radio or television broadcasting equipment; or electronic equipment such as radios, televisions or VCRs.

NOTE:

Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

General from an Electronic Technician Supervisor.

May exercise functional supervision over Electronic Technician Trainees.

Differs from Electronic Technician Supervisor by lack of supervisory responsibilities.

Differ from other technical jobs by specialization in electronic and mechanical maintenance and repair work.

Examples of Work

Reads and interprets electric and electronic schematics and mechanical layouts during diagnosis and repair of equipment.

Makes estimates of repairs to determine if feasible.

Provides visual inspection of television equipment, checking for safety defects and repairing as required.

Maintains an inventory of parts for immediate and emergency repairs.

Performs diagnosis and repairs on electronic and mechanical equipment.

Performs preventive maintenance operations as required on a periodic basis.

Assists in check-out and installation of equipment and systems and recommends acceptance or rejection until corrections are made.

Installs, updates, and expands components and systems to equipment and checks for proper operation.

Performs repairs up to component-level on equipment.

Installs two-way radios in state vehicles.

Serves as liaison with manufacturing and distributors of radio parts and other communications-related personnel.

Issue citations as needed for failure of operations to follow federal and state rules and regulations.
