New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York (CUNY), a comprehensive college located in downtown Brooklyn offering 58 associate and baccalaureate degrees, invites applications for a College Laboratory Technician (CLT) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (MET) is an innovative and growing department, the only campus in CUNY to offer an associate (AAS) and bachelor’s degree (BTech) in Mechanical Engineering Technology, as well as an associate degree (AAS) in Industrial Design. The four-year bachelor of technology (BTech) degree includes concentrations in Industrial Design, Manufacturing Engineering, and Computer systems Technology, with a strong focus on robotics. The Mechanical Engineering Technology programs are ABET-accredited.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology, the College Laboratory Technician will be expected to contribute to the academic and professional vitality of the department through both extensive technical knowledge and the ability to function collaboratively in department-level efforts. The CLT will support both structural and software implementation, as well as direct faculty and student assistance, as needed, in laboratory settings. The ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, may be required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure lab safety protocols according to OSHA standards, including conducting regular safety inspections, providing safety training to lab users, and maintaining safety documentation.

  • Manage lab materials inventory and ordering processes, and the timely renewal of service contracts, to ensure that adequate supplies are available for experiments and projects.

  • Develop and maintain semester-based schedules for part-time lab technicians, coordinating staffing needs with lab courses and supporting professors during scheduled class hours by ensuring the smooth operation of machinery and maintaining a safe environment for students.

  • Oversee maintenance and upkeep of laboratory machinery and equipment, including regular servicing, troubleshooting, and coordinating timely repairs as needed.

  • Coordinate with external vendors and suppliers for equipment purchases, service contracts, and technical support, ensuring timely delivery of materials and services to support lab activities.

  • Oversee installation and setup of new lab machines by coordinating with vendors and facilities management and ensuring proper setup, calibration, and integration into lab operations.

  • Serve as an expert in Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and proficiently operate a variety of CNC machines such as mills, lathes, waterjet, routers, 3D printers, and more.

  • Operate and maintain manual machining equipment, including mill, lathe, materials testing lab equipment, and other related machines.

  • Design and program machining operations through proficient utilization of CAM and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, employing programs such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam and Cura.

  • Collaborate with faculty and researchers to support lab activities and projects, providing technical expertise and assistance as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is preferred.

  • Broad-based knowledge of various software packages such as SolidCAM, Solidworks, Inventor, MasterCAM, Matlab, AutoCAD, Cura, Onshape and other engineering software.

  • Experience providing technical and/or laboratory support in a higher education environment is highly desirable.

  • A commitment to assuring student access to meaningful educational experiences in laboratory settings.

COMPENSATION

$57,933-$65,896. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
