Position Summary

Leads a multi-discipline tax function. Key member of an international team which supports and develops global tax strategies. Manages domestic federal and multi-state tax audits and negotiates closing settlements for Subaru’s U.S. companies. Maintains responsibility for developing and implementing internal company tax policy and planning strategies to protect and leverage the company’s assets at optimal effective tax rates and within an intricate web of tax laws. Maintains responsibility for a broad array of corporate concepts, practices, and procedures and relies on this extensive corporate acumen to plan and accomplish goals.

Major Responsibilities

  • Serves as a key team member of a global valuation study for the development and implementation of various cross-border strategies. Reviews and coordinates transfer pricing documentation studies performed by outside international legal counsel. Regularly participates in strategic planning meetings among the Japanese parent company and its U.S. group and outside tax counsel for purposes of optimizing Japanese parent's U.S. companies’ transfer pricing method.

  • Manages IRS federal tax audits and appeals processes. Oversees multi-state tax audits and appeals. Acts as an advocate for the U.S. Holding Company and its subsidiaries, defends positions taken on the tax returns, and supports the positions through analysis and research of applicable laws, court decisions, and administrative rulings.

  • Manages all aspects of tax governance including the preparation and filing of U.S. Consolidated Income tax return and state income tax returns.

  • Works with outside tax consultants on various tax initiatives both in U.S. and Japan.

  • Directs outside (external) federal, state, and international compliance teams.

  • Provides business and tax resolutions to executive management on new and varied tax disputes. Negotiates directly with tax authorities to resolve significant tax disputes. Focuses on optimal solution-based compliance with federal authorities and state and local regulators.

  • Develops corporate tax policies for all items of taxes and for all aspects of the company’s operations, as well as any proposed business transactions and/or mergers. Researches and analyzes applicable tax laws and recommends to Subaru of America (SOA) executive management tax posture advantages to the current and prospective operations of the SOA group. Ensures that tax policies protect and leverage the company’s assets and optimizes effective tax rates.

  • Serves as lead tax advisor for U.S. Holding Company and its U.S. subsidiaries on general tax/non-compliance related issues.

  • Provides tax advice to executive management in the development of corporate strategies and reports on new and/or pending legislative developments.

  • Monitors developments in federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations and, as appropriate, takes action to minimize taxable income or maximize taxable loss.

  • Informs executive management of the impact and considerations of proposed and pending legislation with regard to Subaru business proposals and transactions.

  • Maintains responsibility for project management in designing, developing, and implementing business and tax solutions.

  • Delivers high quality compliance assurances related to international, federal, and state filings. Oversees tax compliance function.

  • Manages and develops staff members to effectively contribute to team and company goals. Ensures that staff members attend technical tax meetings and provides research and training guidance. Ensures that staff is up to date on current tax legislation. Fosters an environment that rewards continuous improvement efforts. Recruits, trains, and grows a strong Tax team. Fosters a dedicated quality Tax team which focuses on high-quality services.

Required Skills and Personal Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Taxation required.

  • Demonstrated leader in multi-dimensional tax disciplines (international, federal, and state).

  • Specialization in international business transactions (preferably with Japan).

  • Extensive experience in federal and state audits and appeals.

  • Extensive experience with consolidated federal and combined state returns in multi jurisdictions.

  • Experience with business operations in all fifty states.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to interact with executive management, outside legal counsel, IRS, and other government agencies.

  • Excellent research and legal reasoning skills.

  • Proficient computer skills.

Education/Experience Requirements: Master’s degree in Taxation and 12 to 15 years of related experience required.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid Role: Remote work 2 days per week (After 90 Days Onboarding)

  • Travel Required: 10%

Compensation: The recruiting base salary range for this full-time position is $175100 - $220000 / year. Within the range, individual pay is determined by factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
