ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. The Wastewater Operator works under direct supervision the wastewater operator monitors pumps, valves, processes and equipment to regulate the flow of wastewater through various primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment processes; maintains maximum efficiency of plant equipment.
  2. Under direct supervision inspects plant equipment and reports any failures or operating difficulties; stops and starts equipment as required for repairs; operates, adjusts, and maintains chemical feed equipment to ensure compliance with established standards; collects samples of wastewater and other materials at established times for laboratory testing and reporting; performs process analyses as needed.
  3. The wastewater operator reads meters, gauges, charts, instruments; and ensures their continuous operation; performs record keeping functions such as logging plant operations, test results, maintenance work performed, and unusual operating conditions encountered; prepares and maintains a variety of computerized and written records.
  4. Responds to emergency call-out situations; and assist in performing preventive maintenance
  5. Works with potentially hazardous chemicals and substances associated with process application and uses common hand and power tools and drives a motor vehicle in the performance of the work;
  6. Assist in conducts tours of the plant for members of the public, other public agencies, and school groups; answers questions and communicates objectives of the District.
  7. Responds to customer service issues and follows up according to ACWWA policy.
  8. Conducts a variety of administrative tasks such as maintaining logs and recording observations, ordering supplies and general clerical duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of: Operation, maintenance, and wastewater treatment process control Wastewater treatment and reclamation principles, methods, and practices Lab mathematics Safety rules, codes, and regulations and safe work methods pertaining to the work Methods and precautions in storing and handling of hazardous chemicals Basic computerized record keeping applications

Ability to: Be on-call on a rotational basis and work outside of regular work hours as necessary, including weekends and holidays Work under routine and emergency conditions, sometimes in severe weather Operate wastewater treatment plant equipment including SCADA control devices with appropriate levels of supervision Perform routine maintenance and clean facilities and equipment Recognize unusual, inefficient, or dangerous operating conditions and take appropriate action Accurately read and record data from gauges and meters Read and interpret plant piping and distribution diagrams and schematics Perform routine control tests and adjust plant equipment accordingly; take samples and run routine laboratory tests Keep records and make oral and written reports of work performed Understand and follow instructions and directions Perform a wide variety of physically strenuous tasks To work independently and with hand tools Ascending or descending ladders Able to wear a mask/respirator

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education or experience that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and abilities is qualifying. High school graduation or equivalent required.
