Description

Our downtown Dallas insurance industry client is seeking an MGA (Managed General Agent) Controller for a contract to hire opportunity. Must have insurance industry or financial services experience. Role will be overseeing all accounting activities and the eventual management of staff. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have a key role in the development of accounting and financial systems.

Responsibilities:

• Manage accounting and general ledger activities.

• Evaluate new accounting pronouncements for relevance and impact on the company.

• Oversee accounts payable and receivable, fixed assets, and all general ledger activities.

• Ensure timely payments and receipts of broker invoices concerning insurance and reinsurance contracts.

• Maintain compliance with US GAAP and NAIC guidelines.

• Collaborate closely with IT in vetting processes and systems required for successful enterprise and financial management implementation.

• Complete reporting and compliance activities.

• Prepare month-end, quarter-end, and annual reports, including footnotes, income statement, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and various other schedules.

• Prepare all regulatory reporting requirements.

• Implement and maintain internal control structure commensurate with the size of the organization and resources available.

• Prepare premium tax returns and supervise filings.

• Understand and implement ongoing reporting and compliance activities.

• Implement annual budgeting process and oversee variance analysis.

• Understand and manage the cash flow needs of the Company.

• Coordinate all GAAP audit activities.

• Establish and maintain relationships with the Company’s external auditors and regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • Revenue and Risk Flow Understanding: Know how revenue flows through the MGA and where the risk resides before it is transferred to carriers. Familiarity with commissions and premium flows is essential.

  • Industry Knowledge: A broad understanding of the insurance industry, especially regarding gross and net earned premiums. While in-depth traditional insurance background isn't necessary, a high-level grasp of the sector is important.

  • Relevant Experience: Experience in adjacent or value chain sectors such as financial services, insurance brokerage, or banking (particularly if insurance was a client).

  • Commercial Agent Functions: Knowledge of what MGAs do, including how they interact with carriers and the basics of commercial agency operations.

  • Non-Essential Tasks: The role does not involve dealing with the Texas Department of Insurance, convoluted insurance policies, or statutory accounting.

Possession of a minimum of 7 years experience working in a Controller role or similar financial management position

• Proficient in the use of General Ledger

• Experience with Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR)

• Demonstrated abilities in Controllership

• Proven track record in Financial Statement Preparation

• Knowledge and understanding of Federal Income Tax and Federal Income Tax Return

• Familiarity with US GAAP and GAAP Accounting

• Experience in AAA Game will be advantageous

• CPA preferred

• Compliance with all local, state, and federal laws regarding finances, tax filings, and reporting

• Ability to analyze company financials and make recommendations based on findings

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and guide a team effectively

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate complex financial information to stakeholders.
