POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Foreman is responsible for coordinating operations and overseeing crew workers at our numerous construction sites. As the liaison between crew workers and superintendents the foreman will be the key person in charge of overseeing the completion of the project with a keen awareness of material expenses, permits, and employee safety.

The ideal Foreman will have a solid background in the field, strong leadership skills, the ability to direct the work of others and make quick decisions. The Foreman must always be well-organized and strongly focused on safety.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

Safety

A Foreman sets the standard by being an example, wearing their PPE, and promoting a safe work environment. Foremen are responsible and accountable for the safety of the crew under his/her direction. Looking out for the Safety of your team not only builds trust and keeps people safe but helps build a sense of teamwork.

This includes:

  • Knowing, understanding, and following company and OSHA regulations.

  • Facilitates mandatory safety toolbox meetings with the crew.

  • Ensuring completion of initial safety and hazard assessments

  • Maintaining, reviewing, and submitting a Daily Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)

  • Weekly Site Safety Audits

  • The ability to understand and fill out accident / incident paperwork.

  • Injury Accident Reports

  • Safety near Miss Reports

  • Ensure equipment is inspected daily.

    Leadership and Supervision

The Foreman coordinates the crew and must understand consistently apply the Company’s polices. The Foreman is required to be involved and supportive of any day to day disciplinary decisions.

This includes:

  • Using daily huddles to communicate the job expectations to the crew

  • Knowing his/her crew, their skill levels and using that knowledge to assign the appropriate people to each task.

  • Recognizing, addressing, and resolving issues/problems among/between crew members

  • Identifying, and repairing quality issues and coaching crew to minimize these issues.

  • Ensuring crew compliance with project policies and procedures.

  • Listening to his/her crew to meet the needs of the project and encourage communication.

  • Assist the Superintendent and Project Manager in looking ahead for material and labor planning by using budgets and schedules to help keep jobsites efficient.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand scope of projects, schedules, material and resource needs and effectively communicate with Superintendent and/or Project Manager when there are issues that might impact the project results (i.e., manpower shortage, missing equipment/materials, etc)

    Planning and Scheduling

The Foreman is accountable for following project plans and schedules and ensuring that crews under his/her direction perform daily and weekly to meet production goals.

This includes:

  • Translating general work requirements into prioritized work plan for the crew.

  • Listening to the crew to overcome challenges and ensure they have what they need to meet the job expectations.

  • Using install rates to keep from overmanning project and ensure equipment/material are ordered in a timely fashion.

  • Periodically reassess daily goals/schedules/resources to meet forecasted production.

    Employee Relations

The Foreman must champion an inclusive, respectful employee relations culture while being accountable for the adherence to policies and procedures by the crew.

This includes:

  • Promoting, supporting, and facilitating teamwork and harmony between all crew members by promoting and fostering a positive, visible teamwork attitude among all crew members.

  • Recognize and praise in a team environment when a crew member goes above and beyond.

  • Seek crew members’ opinions and use their ideas. Give them credit and tell others whose idea it was.

    Quality Control

The Foreman is accountable for ensuring that the completed work meets quality standards.

This includes:

  • Onsite assessment prior to commencing work to ensure that job is ready, and addressing any concerns

  • Overseeing the execution of the work, including quality and production, ensuring that the crew works to job specifications and follows the plan

  • Clearly communicating expectations and measurements to crew and notifying project leadership when issues arise.

  • Verify project quality with daily walk throughs. Provide coaching/corrective actions/recognition as needed.

  • Inspecting and measuring completed work.

    Administration

The Foreman is accountable for the preparation of reports as required by the employer.

This includes:

  • Preparation of daily production records and daily logs.

  • Reporting on work progress.

  • Knowing, understanding, and enforcing company rules/policies.

  • Worker violation reports

  • Recommending personnel actions such as hiring, releasing, promotions and discipline

Professionalism

Regular and predictable attendance is required for this position. The Foreman’s work schedule is driven by the projects he/she is responsible for managing. Work hours/days are highly variable, unpredictable and require the Foreman to be flexible and available on a 24x7 basis.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE ‘REQUIRED’ FOR THE JOB:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) or certification in a skilled trade (Carpenter, Painter, etc).

  • 5+ years prior experience/education with commercial steel stud framing/drywall/paint/finishing projects

  • Demonstrated ability/aptitude to lead other crew members/projects. Have 1+ years managing field-based crews

  • Have prior experience managing projects from $150,000+ and 6+ crew members.

  • Extensive knowledge of construction best practices, equipment maintenance, and use, and OSHA guidelines.

  • Current certifications in First Aid/CPR/AED, MEWP Certification, OSHA 30, Scaffold Competent Person, Fall Protection, and trade specific certifications.

  • Able to work with a high degree of accuracy, with minimal supervision, in a high paced environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Company and project safety programs; occupational/safety, and environmental issues; employment standards and company polices.

  • Must be proficient in personal computer/IPAD skills including email, Outlook calendar, recordkeeping, database activity, word processing.

  • High degree of demonstrated professionalism and service to employees, clients and vendors required; must be able to deal sensitively with confidential information. Must demonstrate maturity and composure.

  • Able to read and interpret procedural and instructional manuals to include job site / project specification sheets; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively with employees of all levels and backgrounds, clients, and vendors.

  • Able to read drawings, plans, and blueprints and convey this information to others.

  • Understands and enforces the use of “best practices” for each trade when installing work

  • Knows how to operate within policy guidelines and escalate a situation if necessary.

  • Is ready to take on new challenges and is willing to learn

    SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES THAT ARE ‘IMPORTANT FOR SUCCESS’ IN THIS POSITION:

  • Prior construction management experience with emphasis in effective communication and team building.

  • Some level of Manager/Supervisor/Leader Training

  • Can work independently and determine how to achieve objectives of assignment and follow through on details.

  • Demonstrated competency and experience with equipment/materials inventory management.

  • Bilingual English and Spanish

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises diverse project crews up to 5-15 employees.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

  • Foreman is required to frequently talk and listen to others; drive to job sites; and walk through different types of terrain at a job site.

  • Position requires full range of upper extremities in the manipulation of materials used in work processes, combined with simultaneous mental and muscular coordination.

  • Must be able to lift and carry 50+ pounds on a regular/constant basis and up to 150 pounds when needed. (Materials include but are not limited to: loading and unloading of paint products, ladders, compressors, scaffolds, spray rigs.)

  • Reaching above the shoulders and at shoulder height while carrying 30 pounds is required on a regular/constant basis.

  • Must be able to push/pull 20+ pounds on a regular/constant basis; and able to push/pull 50+ pounds frequently.

  • Must be able to frequently lift boxes, packages, equipment and miscellaneous items of up to 50 pounds.

  • Ability to stoop/bend/stand and walk is required on regular/constant basis.

  • Climbing scaffolds and ladders of various heights is also required on a regular basis.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Construction/job sites can have less than ideal conditions, including poor lighting, little to no heat, little to no air-conditioning, high level of noise, etc.

  • On a daily basis, the employee can be exposed to some air contamination (dust, paint fumes, smoke, disagreeable odors, airborne particles, etc.) and toxic or caustic chemicals in the work environment.

  • The employee may work above ground level where the possibility of falling exists.
