GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Market Director, Nursing is primarily accountable for the infrastructure support systems for patient services. Facilitates development and implementation of care documentation, workflow, care standards, nursing research, evidence based practices and magnet hospital standards. When needed, can act as an interim unit director, assist in their development and mentorship. Facilitates education and professional development of staff. Leader for regulatory and accreditation for patient care areas. Operational responsibilities include budgeting, strategic planning, patient care management and integration to achieve organizational goals. Acts as a role model and change agent by initiating and accepting changes for improved patient care and cost reductions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Responsible for creating a nursing management mentor program.

· Assists in unit director orientation and evaluation of unit directors.

· Serves as an interim unit director or supports another individual who is acting as interim unit director.

· Does exit interviews of clinical staff as requested.

· Develops in-services for unit directors and managers together with hospital education department. Provides ongoing educational support to clinical staff.

· Tracks unit progress on organization programs and consolidates into a regular report (i.e. quality, diversity plan, customer service, and evaluations).

· Responsible for planning and evaluating ongoing nursing documentation, work flow and patient care standards and policies.

· Maintains competence in computerized information systems; able to provide leadership for documentation design.

· Facilitates Evidence Based Practice leadership in nursing practice.

· Promotes research utilization in development and implementation of standards policies and procedures. Incorporates evidenced-based practice into nursing practice.

· Responsible for overseeing/evaluating generic nursing orientation program.

· Aware of regulatory and accreditation standards related to nursing. Facilitates staff and management compliance.

· Collaborates with nursing staff to facilitate ongoing dialogue and relationship between practice and policy.

· Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations to ensure philosophy and goals of Mercy Medical Center represented.

· Leads and facilitates multidisciplinary strategy and process teams and CQI teams.

· Works independently and as a team. Make decisions using Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards and professional judgment.

· Provides assistance in staff project work and assigned line responsibilities.

· Leads or facilitates nursing practice council.

· Facilitates achievement of magnet hospital nursing standards.

· Participates and supports efforts towards nursing shared governance and staff development.

· Collaborates with Human Resources on nurse retention and recruitment initiatives.

· Collaborates with CHI clinical-related programs; implements operational and clinical improvements in patient care areas.

· Develops, implements and periodically reviews all policies and procedures that guide and support the assigned services. These include, but are not limited to, JC requirements, federal and state regulations, regulatory standards, etc. Responsible for seeing that policies, procedures and protocols are current and up-to-date.

· Develops and maintains departmental staffing plan, detailing appropriate employee classifications and qualifications consistent with the department’s operational plan, projected volumes, patient/acuity and other relevant indicators. Participates in human resource planning providing recommendations for staffing, proactive recruitment and long-term needs. Assure compliance with staffing plan.

· Develops annual operating and capital budgets, monitors and analyzes performance and productivity and implements necessary corrective plans. Collaborates with other departments in budget preparation, determining capital priorities, monitoring and analyzing trends. Utilizes budget information in management decision-making.

· Maintains open and positive communication with management team, staff, physicians, other hospital departments and others. Collaborates with all disciplines and departments to ensure patient needs and organizational goals are achieved.

· Represents nursing at assigned medical staff and support personnel meetings.

· Participates in development and implementation of strategic plans related to nursing practice.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

· Current licensure as registered nurse in the State of Iowa.

· Bachelor of Science in Nursing, required.

· Master’s degree; MSN or other healthcare degree, preferred.

· Current AONE member or willing to become one within six (6) months from date of hire.

· Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.

· BLS certified by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks).

· Minimum of 5 years of clinical nursing practice in an acute care setting.

· Previous experience as a unit director.

· Progressive clinical, educational, administrative experiences which demonstrates success and credibility in nursing.

· Excellent communication skills including public speaking skills and written skills (reports, grant applications).
