Description

Under general supervision, assist in examining, testing, and treating domestic animals in the animal shelter.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist veterinarian in the provision of medical and surgical care of animals in the shelter.

  • Perform routine laboratory examinations, such as urinalysis, blood and fecal examinations.

  • Administer medications and vaccinations, injections, perform venipuncture, apply wound dressing, clean teeth and measure vital statistics.

  • Provide guidance for staff as needed on examining animals, estimating age, and determining spay/neuter status.

  • Perform routine procedures such as nail trims, basic grooming, ear cleaning, otoscopic exams and suture removal.

  • Coordinate treatment and diagnostic procedures. Triage animals as needed to determine priority for scheduling.

  • Perform and record physical and behavioral examinations of shelter animals upon entry and exit.

  • Obtain and document animal histories from staff, volunteers, potential adopters, and foster placements.

  • Prepare treatment rooms and animal for medical procedures.

  • Sharpen, clean and sterilize exam and pathology instruments.

  • Dispose medical waste.

  • Maintain controlled drug logs in accordance with DEA requirements.

  • Maintain organized inventory of prescription medications, shampoos, veterinary diets, and other veterinary supplies for shelter use.

  • Monitor inventory for expired medications and handle appropriately.

  • Prepare and maintain files, medical charts and update histories and immunization records.

  • Assist veterinarian in research projects and post-mortem examinations.

  • Perform humane euthanasia by injection.

  • Provide information and address questions or concerns from residents, potential animal owners, volunteers and other staff.

  • Transport and restrain animals as needed.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or G.E.D. and completion of a two-year accredited veterinary technician program.

Preferably six (6) months to one (1) year of recent experience in a veterinary hospital or clinic assisting in examining, testing and treating animals. Animal shelter experience is highly desirable.

Equivalency

Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Supplemental Information

Must possess State of Michigan Certification as a Veterinary Technician.

Must possess certification by a Michigan State Licensed Veterinarian to perform euthanasia by injection or willing to become certified to perform euthanasia by injection within six (6) months of hire.

Completion of Emergency Preparedness training to include, but not limited to FEMA ISC 100, 200, 700 and 800 and others as required by department staff. To ensure standards for privacy, certification in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) is required within thirty (30) days of hire.

Valid State of Michigan Operator License and may be required to provide and operate a vehicle on a mileage reimbursement basis.

Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

  • At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

  • At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
