Introduction

The Critical Care Transport Nurse _demonstrates advanced knowledge, skills and understands the unique aspects of the population served in the care of his/her patients. They utilize the experience, education and training to independently deliver care to critically ill and/or injured patients on fixed wing aircraft, rotor wing aircraft and ground ambulances. _

Job Summary and Qualifications

AirLife provides unique services to a large rural area in addition to providing critical care transport services to the Denver metropolitan area. Rural constituents have limited access to specialized services. The rapid access and critical care services provided by AirLife during transport to higher levels of care have significantly improved patient outcomes for the rural communities. 

Here is some of what you can expect from being an AirLife Flight Nurse with us:

  • You will demonstrate awareness of and routinely practice safe work habits and adhere to the AirLife commitment to Safety 

  • Your role coordinates all aspects of patient care with the interdisciplinary team

  • You are responsible for critical care transport knowledge base including flight physiology, flight stressors and safety for all modes of transport and all environments

  • You are responsible for survival training and skills for environmental extremes

  • Your will have the ability to work 12, 24, and 48-hour shifts and travel to remote bases

Requirements for a Flight RN:

  • Compact RN license or Colorado RN license accepted upon hire, CO license required within 90 days of hire 

  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP required at time of hire

  • CFRN, CCRN, CEN, and CTRN certification highly desirable 

  • Advanced certification of CFRN must be acquired within one year of hire and maintained throughout employment

  • Minimum of five years critical care nursing experience caring for diverse populations in tertiary centers

  • Prefer pre-hospital or previous critical care transport experience 

  • Orientation typically ranges between 16-24 weeks

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Must be able to work in highly dynamic environment with exposure to noise, vibration and weather extremes 

  • Must be able to wear Night Vision Goggles (NVG’s) and helmets for extended periods of time in flight (weight of each helmet is approximately 3.64 pounds with the additional weight of the NVG’s of 1.84 pounds)

  • Maximum weight of 250 lbs with all flight gear

  • Weight proportionate to height

  • Able to lift using proper body mechanics

  • Activities may include:

  1. Lifting all size patients and equipment weighing up to into and out of transport vehicles with assistance

  2. Carrying heavy equipment over a variety of terrains without assistance

  3. May need to perform CPR for extended periods of time

  • Providers with chronic medical problems will require approval of AirLife Medical Director and Chief Flight Nurse before employment
