Position Overview Riverside Research is looking for a full time Mechanical Engineer to identify, model and implement improvements to its prototype broadband infrared beacon, called TerraSTAR. TerraSTAR is a new, four-year development project aimed at improving, fabricating, and deploying a system of geographically dispersed broadband infrared beacons to support remote sensor calibration needs. Responsibilities -Identify structural and mechanical improvements to an existing design/prototype -Develop models using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software -Fabricate/test components in a laboratory setting ahead of implementation into the full-scale prototype -Perform hardware component analyses and testing -Perform on-site assembly of prototype units locally at WPAFB as wells as at future (TBD) deployment sites -Support the refinement of engineering code improvements to LabVIEW scripts that remotely operate the power management and pointing of the prototype -Assist with the transition of the prototype's structural components from T-Slot aluminum (e.g. 80/20) to a permanent and reliable design -Support local testing activities to iteratively capture the performance of individual prototype components as well as the prototype as a whole Qualifications BS in Mechanical Engineering with 4+ years of experience - Experience designing, building and refining full-scale prototypes - Experience troubleshooting lab and/or field instrument designs, components (gimbals, power supplies, motors, etc) - Proficient with structural modeling software (Comsol, Solidworks, AutoCAD, etc) - Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs - Able to travel to field locations for system setup and testing, and various meeting locations, 2-3 days at a time, up to 6 times per year - US citizenship and the ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance Desired Qualifications: - Experience with use and programming of Arduino control boards - Experience with alt-azimuth mounts for supporting and rotating an instrument - Welding/fabrication experience - DoD Secret Security Clearance Global Comp $91,000- $150,000 This represents the typical compensation range for this position based on experience, location and other factors.
