FAIRFAX COUNTY Engineer IV in Fairfax, Virginia

$5,000 Signing Bonus*

Come join the team responsible for constructing pedestrian bridges, roads, sidewalks, bus stops, trails, and other transportation and pedestrian projects for the County of Fairfax. The Utilities Design and Construction Division, in the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks an Engineer IV to perform engineering and construction administration work for the Transportation Construction Branch.

Utilities Design and Construction Division is responsible for managing the bid advertisement, contract award processes, and overseeing all aspects of construction contract management for transportation projects and stormwater projects including inspection, testing, code compliance, warranty, and project closeout.

This position is in the Transportation Construction Branch, located in Fairfax County Government center at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia. This position may be eligible for telework..

*A $5,000 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Engineer IV position.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:{tabindex="0" target="_blank"}(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to) Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus, four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering or architectural field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • A valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Professional Engineer or Architect license.

An individual who possesses a valid Professional Engineer or Architect license in another state will be granted a temporary exemption to this requirement pending the Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects decision regarding that individual's application for reciprocity.

Please note that if the selected candidate is licensed in another state, they will be required to obtain a Virginia PE or RA license through the reciprocity process within twelve (12) months of the award letter date as a condition of employment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background and driving record check t the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be highly motivated; possess the skills necessary to work in a fast-paced collaborative team environment; organized, and detail oriented as it relates to construction management and documentation and with strong communication skills.
  • Five (5) years of experience preparing, procuring, administering, and managing construction and engineering contracts for site or utility construction.
  • Five (5) years of experience managing multiple complex capital projects in design and/or construction.
  • Experience in resolving construction claim disputes and thorough knowledge of construction contract law.
  • Three (3) years of experience working with VDOT projects or VDOT permits.
  • Three (3) years of experience working with VDOT LAP projects or completion of VDOT Locally Administered Projects (LAP) Qualification Program.
  • Experience with project financial and budgetary planning, tracking, and reporting at the project level.
  • Five (5) years of experience applying local, federal, and/or state building and site development codes.
  • Certified Construction Management (CCM) Certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to physically negotiate rough terrain and typical construction sites. Ability to produce handwritten and typed documents. Ability to walk steep grades and off-street terrain. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE: Panel interview and may include exercise.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY: Positions within this classification that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
