This is an OPS (Other Personal Services) positions and as such no paid time off is offered. Health benefits will be offered for full-time employment. OPS employees are eligible to participate in a deferred compensation plan.

POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is an independent professional position. The incumbent has received a wide variety of in office and in field training. This position will conduct environmental site inspections to assure compliance with state and local laws and rules and recommending issuance or denial of permits. Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.

  • Inspect Group care facilities to protect the health and safety of clients. Inspects mobile home and recreational vehicle parks and recommends relative to state licensure.

  • Inspects food services facilities regulated by Department of Health to assure compliance with 64E-11 FAC.

  • Inspects public swimming pools and bathing places to assure compliance with state water quality, safety, and operating standards to protect the public health. Activities include permitting, field chemical testing, inspecting water treatment components (pumps, filters, chemical feeders, flow rates, etc.), complaint investigation, consultation, and enforcement.

  • Investigates environmental nuisance complaints relative to solid waste, sewage disposal systems, disease vectors, and any other environmentally related threat to public health. Efforts to secure abatement include consultation, referral, and enforcement.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

  • Are you willing to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours, or days in the event of an emergency? Additionally, emergency duties are inclusive of working in Special Needs Shelters, or performing other emergency duties, but not limited to responses to or threats involving any disaster, man-made or natural.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public health, environmental health, environmental science or a physical biological science.

  • Certified or eligible to become certified within six months of hiring as required by FS 381.0101 as an Environmental Health Professional. Chapter 381.0101, F.S. Established Standards for Certification. Recognizes Registered Sanitarians as Certified. 64E-18, F.A.C. Major course work is no less than 30 semester hours or 40 quarter hours of class work. Requires graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a degree or major coursework in public health, environmental health, environmental science, or a physical biological science.

  • Valid driver’s license free of major infractions and access to an automobile to be utilized for work purposes and receive reimbursement for mileage.

  • Previous experience conducting inspection of regulated Food Hygiene, Mobile home Parks, Group Care or Swimming Pool facilities.

  • Experience in interpretation of rules/regulations.

  • Knowledge of data collection and analysis principles and procedures.

  • Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical data.

  • Ability to prepare technical reports.

  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.

  • Ability to understand and follow legislative policy direction as established in Florida Statutes.

  • Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.

  • Skills in effective communication, verbal and written.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques.

  • Ability to use personal computers .
