Job Description

Protein Therapeutics, the biologics discovery function within Gilead Research, is seeking an experienced and laboratory-facing senior research scientist to join the Protein Science team to expand our research cell line engineering function. The successful candidate will apply state-of-the-art synthetic biology and cell engineering techniques to create research cell lines for recombinant protein production to support drug candidate screening in vitro and in vivo across Gilead’s therapeutic areas including Virology, Oncology, and Inflammation. He/she will also be accountable for developing membrane protein target-expressing cell lines to support Protein Therapeutics' internal antibody discovery and screening activities. Importantly, this strategic position will represent Protein Therapeutics to partner with Gilead Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing organization to refine and streamline the next-generation CHO cell line development process to expeditiously advance biologics programs from Research to Development.

Responsibilities

  • Expand research cell line generation function to support antibody discovery activities from target expression, candidate production, and screening cell line engineering

  • Serve as subject matter expert in cell line engineering technologies. Propose, evaluate, and implement new technologies to expedite the timeline from sequence to protein expression

  • Employ functional genomics approach to enhance cellular processes in platform cell line to improve expression of target molecules

  • Support Protein Therapeutic to advance the biologics discovery campaigns from target ideation to preclinical development

  • Partner with Gilead Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing organization to build the next-generation CHO cell line platform

  • Provide scientific data to support publications and patent filings, present in internal and external team meetings

  • Present findings to project teams and senior management regularly

  • Mentor and develop team members

Experience

  • Highly motivated individual with Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering, Synthetic Biology, or related disciplines with 5 or substantially more years of biopharmaceutical experience

  • Proven track record and extensive hands-on experience in cell line (including CHO) and process developments for research purposes from sequence to production

  • Experience with genetic engineering, CRISPR/Cas editing in mammalian cell line generation

  • Expertise in multispanning membrane protein expression by recombinant cells is desirable. Skills in membrane protein preparation will be highly valued

  • Independent scientific thinking and data management skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively on multiple programs in a fast-paced and matrixed organization

  • Supervisory experience managing scientists and workflows is expected

The salary range for this position is: $191,335.00 - $247,610.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
