General Electric Working Student: Software development Aviation in Garching, Germany

Job Description Summary

GE Aviation is developing technologies to assist pilots in decision making during unforeseen events in flight. For this purpose, we are exploring and developing technologies to reduce pilot workload and increase autonomy. These technologies will be tested on our newly commissioned flight simulator.

You will be involved in programming, testing, and integrating these tools and associated human-machine interfaces in our simulation environments in close cooperation with GE experts in Germany, the UK, and the USA.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

In your role you will:

  • Develop pilot-assisting software tools and human-machine-interfaces based on given functional requirements

  • Understand the functionality and structure of our simulation tools, our flight simulator setup, and our avionics product line

  • Engage in the integration, testing, and verification of these tools, and demonstrate your work on our flight simulator

  • Participate in flight simulator experiments to evaluate the pilots’ impression of our tools and to further improve their functionality and quality

  • Actively engage in discussions with our research and development teams in Germany, the UK, and the USA

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Excellent programming skills in a higher programming language (for example: Ada, C, C++, Pascal, JAVA, C#.NET, Python)

  • Understanding of network infrastructures and app-development for Windows or Linux based systems

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Self-motivated, structured working style

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in designing Human-machine-interfaces or decision-making tools

  • Aeronautical experience (e.g. pilot’s license, gliding experience, drone operator) or basic understanding of cockpit design and/or procedures

  • Working experience or eagerness to work in the aeronautical industry

  • Long-term availability (possible continuation into bachelor’s/master’s thesis project encouraged)
