Job Description

​Join us to collaborate on a multi-discipline research project focused on the conversion of CO2 into fuels and chemicals via electrolysis and gas fermentation.

  • Serve as a technical lead in the optimization and development of metabolic and fermentation engineering strategies in anaerobic microbial production hosts.

  • Genetically rewiring and cultivating cells at bench scale to 5L fermenters.

  • Anaerobic microbial cultivation and physiology.

  • Setup and operation of fermentation bioreactors.

  • Molecular cloning and associated techniques including PCR, plasmid design, DNA isolation and editing, and genetic transformation.

  • Working safely with harmful gases and mutagens.

  • Gas Chromatography analysis for identification and quantification of metabolites.

Basic Qualifications

Research Technician II - High School Diploma or equivalent and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience. Or, related Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.

Research Technician III - High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience. Or, related Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent related education/experience.

Additional Required Qualifications

Research Technician II -

  • Candidates must have a degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated experience taking detailed lab notes, collecting accurate data and analyzing results.

  • Intermediate experience with anaerobic microbial cultivation and physiology.

  • Advanced with setup and operation of fermentation bioreactors.

  • Familiarity with molecular cloning and associated techniques including PCR, plasmid design, DNA isolation and editing, and genetic transformation.

  • Demonstrated experience with Gas Chromatography analysis for identification and quantification of metabolites.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and clear record keeping skills with special attention to data traceability.

  • Good communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.

  • Ability to follow the direction of senior staff in performing detailed experiment procedures.

  • Be adaptable and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and embody a strong safety culture.

  • Multi-tasking and time management skills.

  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Self-motivated, team-player that can work with a highly cross-functional team inclusively.

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic role with greatly varying daily expectations in a Team atmosphere.

Research Technician III -

  • Candidates must have a degree in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology or a closely related field.

  • Demonstrated experience taking detailed lab notes, collecting accurate data and analyzing results.

  • Advanced experience with anaerobic microbial cultivation and physiology.

  • Advanced experience with setup and operation of fermentation bioreactors.

  • Familiarity with molecular cloning and associated techniques including PCR, plasmid design, DNA isolation and editing, and genetic transformation.

  • Demonstrated experience with Gas Chromatography analysis for identification and quantification of metabolites.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, project management and customer relations skills.

  • Ability to follow the direction of senior staff in performing detailed experiment procedures and contribute to said procedures.

  • Be adaptable and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and embody a strong safety culture.

  • Strong multi-tasking and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in metabolic engineering, library generation, recombinant DNA technologies, and biochemical detection methodologies.

  • Multi-omics data generation and/or analysis is a plus.

  • 13C labelling experiments and analysis experience is a plus.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $45,700 - $73,000

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position's work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
