Position Overview

The Hot Mix Asphalt Plant Operator is responsible for operation and maintenance of a hot mix asphalt plant. The position requires an extensive knowledge of aggregate, oils, and admixture products, as well as respective test standards in accordance with mix designs.

Wage ranges from $26 to $28 per hour depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions) Operating asphalt mixing equipment to mix materials such as aggregate, sand, and other additives to produce asphalt mix for construction projects. Monitoring asphalt temperature and viscosity during mixing operations to ensure compliance with specifications. Operating asphalt recycling equipment to grind old asphalt pavement into a fine granular material for reuse in new asphalt pavement. Operating asphalt plant equipment to spread asphalt on road surfaces or other surfaces such as roofs or playgrounds. Operating asphalt batch plants that produce hot mix asphalt for paving operations. Operating asphalt drum mix plants that produce cold mix asphalt for uses such as patching potholes in existing roads. Controlling machinery used to spread, compact, and finish layers of asphalt. Installing asphalt plants at construction sites to produce asphalt for paving operations. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required Minimum of 1 year experience and/or training in a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 3 years of road construction experience preferred .

Work Requirements Must be 18 years of age or older. Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook. Willingness to work independently within a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required. Individuals are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas as stated by OSHA and/or MSHA. Protective equipment that may be required, but not limited to, for this position is: Face Shield, Safety (hard toe) Shoes, and Coveralls. Compliance with all OSHA and/or MSHA regulations. Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required (less than 25% of the time).

Knowledge/Skill Requirements Knowledge of aggregate sizes and classifications. Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards. Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as being able to work independently with attention to detail. Ability to operate heavy and complex equipment that may include but not limited to Loader, Backhoe, Truck, Car, and Asphalt Paving Equipment requiring skill and the exercise of independent judgment.
