Construction Operations Intern - Roadways

Interns will gain experience in the construction industry and prepare them for a career in the road construction industry through field and office experiences working alongside safety, quality control, project managers, superintendents and road crews, production facilities, business analysts, sales and engineering.

Key Experiences

Interns will rotate through various experiences with a focus on construction activities that include: Project management Learn about sourcing, bidding and the build process for construction projects. Work through the bidding process and with estimators. Set up contracts and subcontracts. Asphalt plant operations Spend time working with Plant Operators running asphalt plants. Work with yard crew, loader operator, scale operations and assist with general maintenance of the plant. Construction crews Working on a construction and/or prep crew. Spend time with foreman learning how to prepare for the job and set up job. Learn about construction equipment - various uses and skills required. Business management Work with operations manager and finance on monthly reporting. Understand job cost, workload and scheduling. Understand basics with P&L and financial statements. Aggregate manufacturing Spend time working at an aggregate location and understanding basic operations and logistics Learn about various materials available in quarries and pits.

Education and Experience

Working towards a bachelor's in construction management, engineering, or business management with interest in heavy construction such as site-work, roads or environmental.

Physical Demands

The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Construction Operations Intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Regularly required to sit and/or stand during a work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee is occasionally required to stoop, bend, walk, crouch, and climb. Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds personally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Continuous mental attention required to complete tasks in an efficient manner. Exposure to dust, dirt grease and noise. Work can be performed at heights, requiring the employee to climb ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways. Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and slopes in varying weather conditions. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, based on project need(s) and demand(s).

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Construction Intern encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
