TITLE OF POSITION: Peer Mentor

DEPARTMENT: Academics

LOCATION: W.A. Lettinga Campus

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Transitions and Academic Readiness

SUMMARY:

The Peer-Mentoring Program partners sophomore, junior and senior students, with first-year first generation students. It is proven that if first-year students have meaningful interactions with a positive mentor, their motivation and academic performance are significantly increased. A mentor will listen and encourage their mentee to utilize resources available to achieve academic success. A mentor functions as a coach, friend and most importantly a positive role model. The program supports and encourages students in meeting their personal and educational goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Meet bi-weekly with mentee • Abide by DU employee handbook • Attend peer mentor training and monthly meetings • Offer relevant experience and learning skills • Provide a positive and affirming environment • Model flexibility and a positive growth mindset • Dedicate adequate and consistent time with mentee • Keep records of meetings and share with the director • Respect confidentiality • Report any concerns to the Dir of Student Transitions and Academic Readiness (STAR) or, if applicable Student Care report to Student Life • Meet with Dir of STAR and seek feedback on effectiveness of their mentoring role • Provides GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers. • Understand and abide by all external and internal regulations and policies. This includes NCAA, GLIAC and national affiliations associated within athletics or other role specific regulations. • Demonstrate and promote the University Cultural Values. • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits as an undergraduate student or 3 credits as a graduate student. • Must be meeting Standards of Academic Progress (SAP). • Excellent interpersonal skills that transcend diverse audiences; communicating to university customers with positive attitudes toward change, confidentiality, and conflict resolution. • Must be highly motivated and solution oriented with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the University. • Must be able to work an irregular schedule, evenings or Saturday as needed, additional hours during peak times or as required. • Business office environment. Prolonged sitting and standing. Use of personal computer and telephone (eye and hand strain).
