Job Summary:
The School Nurse is responsible for providing healthcare services and health education to
students, staff, and the school community. This role involves assessing and treating minor health
issues, managing chronic conditions, administering medications, and responding to
emergencies. The School Nurse also plays a key role in developing individualized health care
plans, coordinating with parents, healthcare providers, and school staff, and promoting a healthy
school environment. Additional responsibilities include conducting health screenings, maintaining
health records, and educating students on wellness and healthy lifestyle choices. The School
Nurse ensures compliance with state and federal health regulations and provides guidance on
health-related policies within the school.
Qualifications and Requirements:
1. Current Kansas Registered Nurse License
2. Associate degree in nursing from an accredited university. Bachelors in nursing from an
accredited university is preferred.
3. Current certification in BLS
4. Experience in pediatrics and school setting preferred
5. Must have knowledge and ability to use health equipment and computer applications
6. Maintain current TB testing as required by health department regulations.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Serve as a health advocate for the pupil.
2. Provide building level leadership to promote healthy attitudes among pupils and school
staff.
3. Facilitate in the implementation of Board of Education health related policies.
4. Assess, develop, and implement Individualized Health Plans for students.
5. Oversee the development and management of 504 plans for students.
6. Assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases, including monitoring of
immunization status. Follow district policy regarding the exclusion of students related to
immunization status.
7. Notify parents of the need for medical and screening referrals, with follow up to ensure
all students receive proper care.
8. Assist in providing emergency care for pupils and school personnel in the case if injury or
sudden illness until a lawful guardian assumes responsibility.
9. Document medication administration and maintain, dispense, and secure all student
medication according to policy for medication administration.
10. Document all encounters with students and any information received or shared regarding
student health.
11. Ensure health room has first and health supplies and maintain equipment as directed.
12. Ensure high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to
remain in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional work
environment.

13. Delegate medication and treatments to unlicensed personnel according to Kansas State
Board of Nursing guidelines.

needed in a fast-pace, high-intensive work environment.
