Position Description: Explosive Detection K9 Handler - Schools Department: K9 Teams Reports to: Vice President, Canine Operations FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Telecommute: Non-Eligible

Position Location: Lansing, Michigan

SUMMARY Under the supervision of Zebra K9's vice president, canine operations, this position is responsible for working with a certified explosives detection canine to conduct explosive searches at client's location(s).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Shall complete an annual K9 handler certification with a national canine association through our master trainer.
  • Working in conjunction with client's security personnel, responsible for conducting explosive searches with their assigned canine at designated location(s).
  • Shall maintain the proficiency of their assigned canine by undergoing weekly training sessions conducted by Zebra K9's master trainer.
  • Shall document all maintenance training exercises in which the K9 team participates.
  • Canine teams shall maintain a level of physical fitness that will enable them to safely and effectively perform the duties of their position.
  • Responsible for housing, bathing, feeding, exercising, and grooming assigned explosives detection canine. This position receives a biweekly stipend to care for the canine.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or equivalent required. Two years' experience in canine handling preferred. Law enforcement or military experience preferred. Candidate owned certified explosives detection Labs will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must possess sound judgment, exercise professional conduct, understand and follow business ethics and standards, and maintain a high level of confidentiality in all duties in keeping with the highest standards of Zebra K9.
  • Must possess rapport with animals and ability to maintain humane treatment and care of dogs.
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to work independently with little supervision and accept direction on given assignments.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, crouch, kneel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally is required to climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 90 pounds.
