City of Hot Springs, Arkansas

TITLE: Permit Clerk I

DEPARTMENT: Planning & Development

CLASSIFICATION: Office Assistant 3

PAY GRADE: 06

FLSA: Nonexempt

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

General Statement of Duties

Performs routine to moderately complex clerical work.

Supervision Received

Works under close to general supervision of an administrative superior.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates applications through to issuance for building permits for residential and commercial work,

including coordination with all other departments involved, computing costs, collecting money and issuing

receipts; responds to inquiries by furnishing information requested or referring to appropriate department or

individual; inputs data to and retrieves data from departmental computer system; maintains departmental files;

types correspondence, reports, etc.; prepares reports and certificates of occupancy; performs related work as

required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Expert knowledge of construction terminology and methods. Working knowledge of modern office

practices, procedures and equipment; working knowledge of business English and arithmetic; working

knowledge of basic computer programs and operation; working knowledge of construction

terminology; skill in the use of standard office equipment; ability to collect money and to balance

receipts on a daily basis; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with

administrators, officials, other employees and the public; ability to maintain clerical records; ability to

understand and carry out verbal and written instructions; ability to make computations and calculations

with speed and accuracy.

Education

High school graduation or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in general commercial

and clerical subjects.

Experience

At least one year in general office, clerical and public contact work.

Substitution

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
