We seek a Licensed Veterinary Technician for The Small Animal Community Practice (SACP). Veterinary Technicians here support the Community Practice Service, Primary Care Surgery Service, and related programs and services as needed, including Shelter Outreach Service (SOS) and high-quality high-volume spay-neuter (HQHVSN). We work as a team, coordinating receiving and workup of incoming cases from the first point of contact to discharge.

In this position you will handle varied caseloads, including appointments and surgery, while assisting students and clinicians with the preparation and management of service flow.

Specifically you will:

• Guide student clinicians in the areas of time management, efficient case flow, client communication, various diagnostic tests, restraint, and venipuncture.
• Patient receiving; organizing and assisting with all technical aspects of patient care/procedures needed to perform exemplary patient care and handling, as well as preparing patients for exams, assisting during exams, room preparation, handling and monitoring patients, handling, and monitoring equipment; patient set up, and nursing care as needed; inventory, stocking and ensuring proper supplies are readily available for proper patient care.
• Run your own technician appointments
• Orient and instruct veterinary students, interns, and occasionally residents in technical skills and procedures; perform medical procedures under the supervision of a veterinarian; act as a liaison between customer service representatives, nursing staff, students, and clinicians and provide input to clinicians and staff regarding nursing care needs; assist with scheduling, set-up, and completion of all nursing care and procedures needed by patients using auxiliary services throughout CUHA.
• Travel with the Cornell team (veterinarian, LVT, student(s)) to local shelters to work in collaboration with the Shelter Outreach Service (SOS) program. Assist the Cornell faculty and/or SOS Veterinarians as needed during the clinic day, and for each patient, ensure safe and efficient induction and maintenance of anesthesia as well as patient pre-surgical prep and patient monitoring.
• Help teach the student(s) anesthesia, patient restraint, patient prep, and patient monitoring during the entire perioperative period. Assist the veterinary students in pre-operative examinations while updating veterinarians with any significant physical exam findings. Perform the duties of a scrub nurse on sterilization surgeries, dental procedures, and ancillary surgical procedures. Maintain the flow of surgeries, which includes preparing the surgical area and setting up equipment and supplies. Perform the duties of an anesthetist for each surgical patient.
• Assist with the student teaching and clinical care of patients undergoing spay/neuters at local shelters with Shelter Outreach Services (SOS). Maintain and transport anesthetic and surgical equipment and report any problems as needed. Ensure all necessary related materials for SOS trips are ready and stocked in the van. Drive SOS students and/or clinicians to the assigned facility/shelter using a University-owned vehicle.
• Collaborate with other services and clinicians to offer HQHVSN services at SACP, including managing workflow, managing anesthesia, and assisting students and clinicians with sterilization procedures.

What qualifications are required?

• Associates degree in Veterinary Technology and up to 2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• New York State licensure or eligibility to become licensed in NYS.

To be successful you will need:

• Ability to restrain cats and dogs appropriately as well as feel comfortable handling feral/fractious cats.
• A valid driver's license. Proficiency with record-keeping software currently in use by CUHA.
• Excellent oral and written communication, organizational, deductive reasoning and pattern recognition skills along with relational skills to aid effective communication with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians, and customers in a professional manner at all times.
• Willingness to meet the physical requirements of the position, which include, but are not limited to, stressful circumstances, prolonged standing, and kneeling, and lifting heavy patients. Must be able to lift and restrain animals that may exceed 50 pounds.
• Strong interest in working collaboratively as a team member as well as proactively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment handling multiple tasks with contending timelines while paying close attention to details.
• Previous private practice experience is a plus.

The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to ensure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception.Schedule may include University and calendar holiday coverage to meet business needs. This position may include a rotating Saturday schedule, as well as alternating SOS days with other Technicians.Due to the nature of the SOS teaching trips, there are many variables (number of students, travel time, etc), which may involve a longer day and will require flexibility on the part of the support staff.
