Job Summary

Second-shift position responsible for the care, cleaning, and stocking of the Ithaca College Dining Services facilities. While the dining hall is open, the Utility Custodian is expected to perform a variety of duties involving the maintenance of kitchen work areas, equipment, and utensils. After the dining hall has closed, this position is expected to perform a variety of custodial and general housekeeping duties to ensure that Dining Services facilities are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion. Provide customer service to assist in promoting a hospitable environment and positive perceptions of College facilities. This position is considered to be essential during emergency situations and the incumbent is subject to report to work when requested.

Supervision

This position reports to the Assistant Manager of Utility and Dish Room Operations. This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Representative Duties

Position/Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain the safety, cleanliness and order of kitchen work areas, equipment, and utensils, to include transferring supplies and equipment within and between storage and work areas; washing dishes by hand or in a dishwashing machine; washing worktables, walls, refrigerators, and meat blocks; sweeping, mopping, cleaning, and vacuuming floors; cleaning equipment; and removing trash and garbage to designated areas.

  • Maintain the safety, cleanliness and order of wider Dining Services facilities, i.e. dining rooms, service areas, etc., to include cleaning floors, walls, furniture and windows; conducting routing maintenance and upkeep, e.g. resetting clocks, changing accessible light bulbs and clock batteries; emptying mousetraps and other related activities.

  • Clean bathrooms adjacent to Dining Services facilities to include cleaning and sanitizing surfaces and toilets; filling/refilling consumables, e.g. toilet paper, paper towels, hand soaps; properly disposing of all trash and bio-hazardous materials.

  • Comply with all Ithaca College safety and risk management policies and procedures, to include participating in regular safety trainings and hazard assessments; attending all allergy and foodborne illness in-service training; using cleaning and sanitizing chemicals in the proscribed manner complying with HACCP policies and procedures; and reporting accidents and injuries in a timely manner.

  • Clean custodial tools and equipment, inform supervisors of damage or replacement needs, complete and submit all necessary paperwork, records and logs, as required.

  • Develop and demonstrate a multicultural awareness and contribute to cultivating an inclusive, diverse and respectful College community. Demonstrate civil and inclusive behavior when interacting with staff, faculty, students and visitors to the College. Promote a flexible, collaborative and inclusive work and living environment and engage in educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

    Qualifications

    Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work with minimal supervision; good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment; familiarity with various cleaning agents and related equipment; the ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. and climb a 6-ft. ladder are required. A valid NYS Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one is preferred.

    The successful candidates must possess excellent customer service, attention to detail, and the ability to successfully work both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication skills are a crucial part of this role due to the high volume of interactions with coworkers, students, faculty, and staff. The ability to use current technology to perform basic college functions. This includes using email, completing online mandatory trainings, enrolling in the benefits program, submitting a timecard, and entering service requests is required.

    Work Environment

    The work of the Utility Custodian is carried out within an accessible, safe, indoor and occasional outdoor environment. Long periods of walking, standing, bending and carrying moderately heavy items (up to 50 pounds) may be necessary. The Utility Custodian will be issued and/or required to wear slip resistant shoes. This position will be required to work overtime, nights and weekends and various holidays as needed.
