Burns & McDonnell Staff Electrical Engineer (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

Description

Plan and provide engineering and construction support for substation projects ranging from distribution to transmission-level systems. Assist project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for the projects. Communicate and coordinate project activities with project manager, project engineer, client, and others as needed. Coordinate and perform project studies and associated report preparation including substation grounding, lightning protection, and AC and DC station service. Coordinate with and provide technical assistance to SCADA engineers, substation physical design engineers, and relay/controls design staff to develop and integrate substation protection, control, and monitoring systems. Apply strong knowledge of commonly used electrical engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures to create, modify, and review electrical drawings. Research and compile project related data as required for the successful completion of projects. Provide leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members. Telecommuting is allowed up to 30 days per year. Primarily domestic travel required up to 10% of the time for site visits, client visits, and technical conferences.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, or a directly related field plus three (3) years of experience in electrical engineering. Alternatively, the employer will accept a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, or a directly related field plus two (2) years of experience in electrical engineering in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of described experience.

Must have two (2) years of experience in each of the following:

  • Providing engineering for the design of distribution or transmission substation (or switching station) facilities or related systems.

  • Experience with electric utility standard techniques, procedures, and criteria utilizing NESC, IEEE, NFPA, or other applicable industry standards.

  • Performing substation protection and control design, engineering analysis, and supporting calculations (e.g., voltage drop, conduit fill, battery sizing).

  • Preparing new and modifying existing relay drawings including single lines, three lines, AC and DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay and control panel arrangements.

  • Preparing new and modifying existing SCADA, fiber-optic, or relay communication drawings.

  • Preparing new and modifying existing grounding, conduit, or cable routing plans.

  • Preparing new and modifying existing Bill of Material (BOM) and Cable lists.

  • Reviewing vendor submittals for conformance to specifications.

Telecommuting is allowed up to 30 days per year. Primarily domestic travel required up to 10% of the time for site visits, client visits, and technical conferences.
