PURPOSE

Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) job descriptions are a management tool to help organize duties and provide employees with the employer’s expectations with regard to a specific job classification. JOB SUMMARY

Performs general automotive, truck, and equipment maintenance and repair to keep the vehicles and mechanical equipment in good condition for all KIC departments. Coordinates work orders for servicing vehicles and equipment and submits billing to the appropriate department. May be responsible for coordinating workforce development and an apprenticeship program, which would involve overseeing apprentice positions. Maintaining a safe working environment by reporting unsafe conditions to the appropriate supervisor upon discovery. Also responsible for complying with federal and state laws and regulations regarding the protection of the health and safety of employees and ensuring safety measures comply in the workshop.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs general maintenance and repair on automobiles, light and heavy trucks, backhoes, loaders, and other automotive and mechanical equipment.

  • Performs lubrication and other routine service work.

  • Performs tire repair, balancing, and change-out services.

  • Assists in troubleshooting, overhaul, and significant repair activities.

  • Performs general maintenance work on the tools, equipment, and garage facilities as required to maintain a safe and efficient garage operation.

  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.

  • Responds after hours and on weekends as assigned.

  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent plus some training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.

  • Three (3) years’ experience as an auto/truck mechanic.

  • A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.

  • Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • Experience in community clinic preferred and a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation principles and mechanical repair methods as applicable to automobiles, light and heavy trucks, and construction equipment. Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions standard for municipal maintenance and repair activities;

  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance;

  • Skill in operation and care of listed tools and equipment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors, and the public;

  • Preference is given to applicants with certified auto mechanics and/or apprenticeship experience.

While carrying out the responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The noise level in the work environment is usually average.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The work environment is moderately noisy.

CONDITIONS OF HIRE

  • May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.
