Central Maine Medical Center Senior Director - Total Rewards in Lewiston, Maine

Central Maine Healthcare is seeking a Senior Director of Total Rewards to join our team!

Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer, the Sr. Director Total Rewards at Central Maine Healthcare will lead its compensation, benefits, reward, and wellness teams. The role will require the individual to manage the design and implementation of innovative, best-in-class strategies to attract, reward, and retain top talent. This position is a vital member of the Human Resources leadership team, collaborating to develop short- and long-term plans that help drive the organization’s success.

About Central Maine Healthcare

Central Maine Healthcare is an integrated healthcare delivery system serving 400,000 people living in central, western and Midcoast Maine. CMH's hospital facilities include Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Bridgton Hospital and Rumford Hospital. As a functional expert in total rewards strategies, the Sr. Director Total Rewards will be responsible for team member, physician, and executive compensation, short- and long-term incentives, salary and hourly reviews, health, welfare, savings and pension plans, and ancillary benefits. This position will work closely with internal functions (Finance, Sales Ops, IT, etc.) and external partners/vendors to deliver creative and market-sensitive Total Rewards strategies that are consistent, scalable, effective, and optimal return on investment.

This position is responsible for managing the Workday HRIS.This position also ensures that compensation, benefit, and rewards programs support the organization's strategic objectives, align with the Central Maine Healthcare culture, and meet all legal and regulatory requirements. This role manages a service-oriented team of professionals dedicated to providing a competitive total rewards program through best-in-class program design, excellent consultative services, and exceptional user experience.

Responsibilities

Leads all Central Maine Healthcare’s Total Rewards functions and programs, including team member, leadership, and executive compensation; employee benefits programs (health, welfare, and retirement programs, ancillary benefits such as tuition reimbursement and student debt);

  • Evaluate, design, and execute all employee benefit programs, compensation/salary administration guidelines, and compensation philosophy aligned with culture and supporting organization goals in the communities served.

  • Ensures a progressive and contemporary approach to designing, analyzing, and implementing team member, leadership, and executive compensation packages, including short—and long-term incentive design. Supports the annual Executive Compensation Planning cycle, providing insight, technical expertise, analysis, and recommendations.

  • Is a role model for the HR Brand and the Central Maine Healthcare culture,

  • Demonstrates business and operational insight to understand organizational challenges, identify opportunities to drive and support growth strategies, and serve as a steward for fiscal responsibility.

  • Evaluate and manage new positions and job description development, creating job ranges and grade levels. Advocate for and drive job description structures and approval processes enabled through best-in-class technology solutions.

  • Develops standardized processes, governance, and effective controls for each function within the Total Rewards organization, ensuring compliance with current and emerging regulatory requirements, competitive practices, and annual audit plans.

  • Evaluate all benefit (health & welfare, retirement, ancillary, etc.) programs, proposing/recommending necessary modifications, developing creative approaches, and ensuring achievement of competitive market position and other goals identified by the organization, including return on investment. Demonstrates thought leadership to address current and emerging compensation and benefits trends and issues as well as recruitment and retention needs.

  • Manages and evaluates consultants and benefits vendors to ensure deadlines and key performance indicators are met and negotiates competitive rates. Partners with outside experts, including consultants, carriers, third-party administrators, and outside counsel, for benchmarking, plan design, coverage, renewals, and communications.

  • Oversees and governs non-cash programs, including rewards and recognition programs, to support the Central Maine Healthcare Health culture and overall engagement.

  • Partners closely with HR Business Partners and Talent Strategy in the development of critical frameworks, including promotional guidelines, career ladders, and leveling criteria/frameworks

  • Develops comprehensive and integrated communication and change management strategies that drive awareness, adoption, and understanding of our programs. As necessary, prepares and delivers presentations to high-level stakeholders and leadership, including the Board of Directors.

  • Builds, develops, and sustains a high-performing Total Rewards team, ensuring top talent in critical roles supporting the function. Ensures accountability and follow-through for each team member on projects, performance, collaboration, and support for the organization. Provide coaching and mentorship to develop team members, ensure succession planning is in place, and develop a strong bench of talent for critical roles.

    Educational / Experience Requirements

  • Master’s Degree required. A degree in business, human resources, organizational development, healthcare management, or equivalent is preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.

  • A minimum of 15 years of Human Resources leadership experience is required, with at least five years in the healthcare industry

  • Certified Total Rewards Professional, Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), SHRM Human Resources Leadership or similar certification preferred

  • Proven track record applying subject matter expertise (technical skills) to address a core business need and developing a process/system/solution that can deliver repeated/scalable positive results.

  • Extensive experience in Workday payroll, human resources, and compensation software.
