Job Overview:

Obtains blood specimens by skin puncture or venipuncture using appropriate techniques for clinical laboratory testing and age appropriateness of patient. (Patient population includes neonatal through geriatrics). Performs routine processing of laboratory specimens by verifying patient information, order entry via computer terminals, labeling and delivery to the appropriate testing area; includes inpatient and outpatient requests. Answers phones and routes messages to appropriate personnel. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma

  • Vocational/Trade training

Preferred:

  • One to three years phlebotomy experience

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Per Diem

  • Day Shift

  • Variable Hours

  • Weekends

Essential Functions:

  • Answers telephones and dispatches messages pertaining to laboratory work from physicians, nurses, other departments and the general public to appropriate laboratory personnel.

  • Applies tourniquet in least constrictive manner and removes when blood begins to enter tube.

  • Assists in training of new employees.

  • Completes duties as assigned and leaves area in a neat, organized manner.

  • Generates laboratory requisitions indicating tests to be performed via computer terminal. Correctly identifies patient samples with computer databases and labels specimens according to established procedures.

  • Keeps printers in area of responsibility aligned and filled with paper and forms.

  • Maintains skin integrity by using appropriate Band-Aids/dressing after procedure.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Performs phlebotomy by venipuncture or finger/heel stick for proper specimen collection.

  • Processes outpatient referral specimens, registering demographics in the Hospital Information Systems and performing order entry as in ( above.

  • Properly labels specimens with pertinent patient information

  • Provides continuity of work flow by relaying messages, instructions, etc. to personnel on next shift.

  • Provides information to patient regarding the appearance and care of venipuncture site.

  • Reports computer malfunctions to appropriate person.

  • Washes hands before and after putting on gloves.
