Los Alamos National Laboratory Protective Systems Team Leader (R&D Manager 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The Team Leader position serves as first-line manager, R&D Manager 2 of the Protective Systems Team in the Accelerator Operations Group (AOT-OPS) at the LANSCE Accelerator Facility. The successful candidate will oversee a team of engineers and technicians that are responsible for:

  • Operating and maintaining personnel and machine protection systems and alarms at the LANSCE Accelerator Facility.

  • Ensuring that these systems remain compatible with changes and upgrades to the accelerator complex.

  • Designing, certifying, and implementing modern accelerator safety systems.

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for modeling exemplary behavior, fostering open communication, engaging workers in the field, rewarding positive behavior and addressing deficiencies through accountability.

  • Other responsibilities include managing the team's budget, directing assignments, employee hiring and onboarding processes, providing continuous performance management and feedback to further develop staff including annual performance discussions, identification of growth opportunities and ensuring proper team recognition and appreciation.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated and current electronic design and troubleshooting experience in both analog and digital circuitry, involving PCB design and in-depth knowledge of PLC, relay and FPGA based interlock system design.

  • Experience working in an organization under formal conduct of operations doctrine including documentation development, document control, configuration control, and working with management level 2 equipment and systems.

  • Management and experience adhering to engineering policies, programs, procedures, and practices.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in conducting research and/or development activities, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to problems affecting research and development activities, operations, projects, and/or initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate effectively with colleagues, at the team, group, division, and laboratory levels.

  • Ability and willingness to be on-call and to work after hours.

Education/Experience : Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 3 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current and extensive experience working at an accelerator complex.

  • Successfully have completed Protective Systems formal qualification program.

  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience and skills in setting priorities and assigning tasks, performance evaluation, mentoring of employees, coaching and team building, and conflict resolution.

  • Project management experience including schedule development, cost estimates, and project status updates.

  • Active Q clearance.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
