GE Aerospace Sub-Section Manager - F404/F414 Hot Section Engineering in Lynn, Massachusetts

Job Description Summary

This role is for a front-line leader (leader of individual contributors) in the F404/F414 Design Engineering organization reporting to the Design Engineering Section Leader. In this role, the Sub-Section Manager (SSM) will be responsible for building and leading a team of engineers with various levels of experience to own all engineering tasks associated with the on-going support of hot section hardware (combustion and turbine modules). This includes New Product Introductions (NPI), Component Improvement Programs (CIP), manufacturing & assembly support activities and identifying & leading strategic engineering initiatives.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Manages a 10+ person team of professional, lead professional, and senior professional engineers as well as purchased services. Requires specialized knowledge within the function.

  • Influence the development of strategy for the area of responsibility, including control of resources and influencing policy formulation.

  • Interprets simple internal and external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services. Stays informed of industry trends that may inform work.

  • Work with peer managers to create and execute a holistic strategy for improving the health of the product line team.

  • Uses high level of judgment to make decisions and handle complex tasks or problems in areas of operational, product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering. Has ability to assess quality of information given and ask pertinent questions to stakeholders. Able to offer new solutions to problems outside of set parameters and is able to construct and provide recommendations. Uses multiple internal and some external sources outside of own function to help arrive at a decision.

  • May lead functional teams or projects with minimal resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity. Communicates difficult concepts and may influence others' options on particular topics. May guide others to consider a different point of view.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely to leadership within Engineering, Sourcing, and Supply Chain divisions and foster a relationship of mutual trust and respect.

  • Foster a culture of transparency, candor, and proactive planning & execution.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's of Engineering degree from an accredited university or college

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a relevant engineering role.

Desired Characteristics

  • 7 years of experience in jet engine design engineering.

  • Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • Experience leading teams including direct reports inside the US.

  • Experience in manufacturing and design of Hot Section hardware.

  • Experience leading remote employees and influencing indirect reports.

  • Demonstrated collaboration across functions and organizations.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead programs / projects.

  • Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs.
