Kelly Services Permit Writer in Midland, Michigan

Kelly is currently seeking an experienced Permit Writer/Safety Observer to join a leading team in Midland, Michigan ! The Permit Writer/ Safety Observer will be accountable for following the Construction Safety Strategy CSS to address safety and health concerns by issuing thorough and complete core work permits as well as any secondary permits allowed by the CSS. The Permit Writer/Safety Observer must possess the skills for proper interactions and interventions with workers, crew leaders, and foreman in the field.

This role reports to the Construction Safety Manager in the safety observer capacity and does require the following qualifications:

  • Experience issuing, auditing, and closing out safe work permits is preferred.

  • Candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to safety, health, and environment SHE excellence. Knowledge of, and experience in, related to field activities on small to large scale industrial projects.

  • Familiarity and experience issuing and auditing the safe work permitting process.

  • Knowledge of craft competencies required in construction of the assigned project.

  • Be knowledgeable of local, state and federal safety rules, regulations and Corteva standards to assist project teams in interpretation and implementation.

  • Great time management skills including the ability to manage a substantial workload.

  • Interpersonal skills for working in a multi-functional team environment, with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and to deliver per project objectives.

  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute multiple current activities and deliver on commitments under tight time constraints.

  • English fluency in speaking and writing, be an active listener.

  • Sound interpersonal and communication skills, confidence, and ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Computer literate in Microsoft excel, word, zoom meetings, and database applications.

  • Requires the physical ability to perform the following activities:

  • Extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing stairs, ladders, and scaffolding.

  • Working from elevated platforms, uneven surfaces, and working in small or crowded spaces.

  • Some lifting may be required.

  • Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project, wear appropriate and standard issued PPE required for each assigned work location ie: 3-ply surgical style masks, protective eyewear, high vis, steel toed shoes or boots, long sleeves, gloves, etc.

  • Capable of working 40-60 hours a week while wearing a 3-ply surgical mask

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Issuing core work permits, and field inspections on an active industrial construction job site.

  • Monitor area for unsafe conditions, behaviors, and practices.

  • Ensure workforce labor and construction equipment requirements for safe and effective execution of the work.

  • Field verify safe completion.

  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with project quality expectations and requirements.

  • Coordinate with other disciplines superintendent s area construction work activities and plans this position requires the permit issuer to attend daily focus meetings and prep permits for the following day.

  • Assist Construction Safety Manager in verifying manpower headcount to match workers signed onto the core permit.

  • Identify field quality issues to project QA and assists with NCR closures.

  • Ensure in field verification of safety readiness prior to installations and ensuring safe construction and energization.

  • Assist project team with interpretation, application, and implementation of design and safety standards and practices.
