Salvation Army Food Service Assistant (Part-time) in Minneapolis, Minnesota

Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Minimum six (6) months experience working with people, preferably in a food services or other similar environment. Ability to take directions and adapt to fast-paced environment. Must be familiar with quantity food preparation, kitchen equipment and proper sanitation practices. Must be able to demonstrate sensitivity to issues of homelessness, chemical addiction, and unemployment, racial and cultural diversity. Possess an aptitude in oral communications. Must be trustworthy, especially in confidential matters. Ability to accept supervision and work with a team of co-workers. Ability to use Salvation Army approved word processing, email, and timecards. Valid Driver's License. (Must meet the guidelines provided by the State of residence and the automobile insurance provider as pertaining to corps' passenger vans/buses.) Must pass The Salvation Army background checks, pre-employment drug testing, and meet the MVR driver's qualifications. Willingness to support the philosophy, goals, objectives, and mission of The Salvation Army. It must be understood by the incumbent that the provisions of Safe From Harm will apply upon commencement of employment and also understood that the required Safe From Harm training be satisfactorily completed within the first thirty (30) days of employment. Summary of Position The Food Service Assistant is responsible for assisting in the daily operation of a commercial kitchen, including preparing meals, serving meals and daily upkeep of the kitchen and dining areas in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Health. This is a regular part time position with a workweek expectation of 25 hours per week. Essential Duties and Responsibilities This job description is not all inclusive. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates. Support the Mission of The Salvation Army by treating every client, donor, and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind. Engage all community members (including and not limited to, clients and visitors) in a way that brings them to the Corps for programming, events, activities, and Pathway of Hope. Prepare facility meals in accordance with menu; making allowances for clients medically approved special dietary needs. Serve meals to clients and staff according to posted time schedule. Monitor the number of staff meals received each day. Wash and put away all dishes. Maintain and organize dish-room. Put away perishables and non-perishable stock items on delivery days. Check and record temperature of food before each meal is served. Complete assigned cleaning duties as scheduled or as necessary. Maintain dining room and kitchen cleanliness and organization. Maintain and organize storage spaces and cookers. Assist volunteers in their responsibilities. Meet and greet all clients in a professional and courteous manner. Driving a company vehicle to pick up and deliver meals, supplies, donations, etc., as required. All other duties as assigned. 1010 Currie Avenue Minneapolis, MN 55403 Part Time, 25 hours/week $17.16/hour Working Conditions There are normally no hazardous or significantly unpleasant physical working conditions, with the exception of the occasional emotional distress or turmoil (due to varying situations) with and between staff and/or clients and client's families. This position may require occasional driving throughout the Twin Citie Metro area. The duties and responsibilities of this position cannot be performed from home. Hearing Able to hear average or normal conversation and receive ordinary information. Repetitive Motion Movements frequent and regularly required use of the entire body. Visual Abilities Average, ordinary, visual activity necessary to prepare and inspect documents and for driving. Physical Strength Prolonged standing all day, walking, bending, stooping, turning, stretching, reaching and lifting. Ability to regularly lift/move 50 pounds. Travel The incumbent may be required to travel by personal vehicle, organization vehicle or other modes of travel to support the Mission of the Salvation Army. Mental Activities and Requirements of Position Reasoning Ability Ability to interpret various instructions. Mathematics Ability Ability to perform basic math skills such as counting, adding, subtracting, multiplication, division and percentages. Language Ability Ability to read, write and speak fluent English Ability to read a variety of written materials. Ability to speak, read and write English in a manner that is sufficient for clear communication with supervisors, employees, leaders, and participants in order to perform the requirements of this job.
