Location : FinDev Canada headquarters is in downtown Montreal. For the right candidate, Ottawa or Toronto will be considered, with the flexibility to work under a hybrid model (home/office).

Salary: $144,156 to $192,208 annually performance-based incentive

Position & Team Overview :

The Credit Authorization Team at FinDev Canada actively manages financial and non-financial risks, balancing customer solutions with financial sustainability.

As the Director of Credit Authorization, reporting to the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), you will lead the development and execution of credit authorization strategies that ensure financial sustainability while maximizing our development impact. You will be at the forefront of managing financial and non-financial risks, balancing customer solutions with our rigorous risk management standards.

In this pivotal role, you will forge strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring that we leverage every opportunity to support high-impact projects. Your oversight will be crucial in authorizing complex transactions and evolving our credit practices to align with our mission.

In this role, you will build and lead a diverse team, fostering a culture of technical excellence and precision. Your strong business judgment, diplomatic skills, and ability to manage multiple demands will be key to your success. Overseeing the Credit Authorization Team, you will ensure that resources are utilized efficiently and effectively to achieve our goals. Your leadership will be instrumental in maintaining and developing excellent internal partner relationships, supporting the growth of FinDev Canada’s portfolio, and delivering timely and insightful advice to the business.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Team Leadership & Management: Lead and guide the Credit Authorization Team, ensuring alignment with FinDev Canada’s mandate. You’ll be responsible for hiring, motivating, training, and developing a high-performing team.

  • Risk Analysis & Surveillance: Lead deep dives into risk assessments prepared by various parties, ensuring thorough credit surveillance and precise risk quantification for each transaction.

  • Independent Review & Authorization: Take charge of reviewing, assessing, and authorizing complex transaction proposals. Balance credit risks, policy issues, and commercial needs across diverse product lines.

  • Valuation & Risk Mitigation: Provide expert opinions on the valuation and quality of risk mitigants and security structures, with a keen understanding of the unique characteristics of FinDev Canada’s product lines and industrial sectors.

  • Transaction Summaries & Recommendations: Oversee the creation of independent, critical transaction authorization summaries and recommendations. Your expertise will drive informed decision-making processes that align with our strategic goals.

  • Risk Management Expertise: Share your extensive knowledge of risk management and credit structuring with your team and business partners. Guide them on deal structures, credit risk acceptability, policy interpretation, and the authorization process, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.

  • Decision-Making: Operate within defined authority parameters to make independent authorization decisions, considering both financial and non-financial transaction risks. Your decisions will be instrumental in steering our organization towards sustainable growth.

  • Guideline Development: Contribute to the creation and refinement of underwriting guidelines by providing expert insights and recommendations. Your input will help shape the future of our credit practices, ensuring they remain robust and forward-thinking.

What we are looking for:

Must haves

  • Completed Master of Business Administration (MBA)

  • Minimum 15 years experience in commercial credit transactions in a variety of industries and geographies

  • Minimum 5 or more years’ experience in formal or informal people leadership or coaching and mentoring individuals

  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent negotiation and risk mitigation skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including drafting

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills

  • Language Profile: Strong preference for fluency in both official languages (English & French) or Spanish

  • Solid experience reading and interpreting financial statements with strong risk analysis skills

Nice to haves

  • Accounting or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation
