Overview:

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Ceramics Instructor is a part time position responsible for instructing, leading and supervising participants in creating clay projects.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervise program participants.

  • Implement activities and provide instruction for participants during classes.

  • Maintain park district equipment, excluding the kiln and keep facility in a clean and orderly manner.

  • Lock and unlock the pottery studio.

  • Communicate effectively with participants, parents and staff regarding rule infractions, questions, and concerns.

  • Record and communicate any difficult situations or behaviors to Program Manager immediately.

  • Demonstrate and support park district customer service standards.

  • Follow district and departmental safety, personnel, and administrative policies, procedures and ordinances.

  • Maintain a proactive approach to safety and risk management, reporting all accidents, incidents, and unsafe conditions in a timely manner.

  • Dry, load and fire participant's art work.

  • Explain the firing process to participants.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Distribute written communication to participants as necessary.

  • Notify Program Manager when supplies need to be ordered or restocked.

  • Perform miscellaneous job-related tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of hand building techniques: slab, coil and pinch pot construction, using mold forms and slab roller.

  • Knowledge of surface treatment techniques: slips, stains and glazes.

  • Knowledge of porcelain, stoneware and low fire clay bodies.

  • Knowledge of drying, loading and firing student art work.

  • Knowledge of firing practices: how to ramp a firing, how to explain the firing process to participants.

  • Ability to teach specific activities or skills to participants.

  • Demonstrates excellent customer service and leadership skills.

  • Ability to address complaints and resolve concerns as needed.

  • Ability to work independently on day-to-day tasks and projects with general direction from supervisor.

Education and Experience:

  • Must have experience working with children.

  • Must have experience creating clay artwork.

  • An educational background in visual arts is preferred.

Special Considerations:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.

  • Subject to modified/flexible work schedule.

  • Subject to inside environmental conditions, such as dust.

  • Occasionally lift, carry and/or move object(s) weighing ≤ 30 lbs. Lifting assistance is required when lifting ≥ 30 lbs.

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR, AED and First Aid certification within four (4) weeks of date of hire
