Job Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Group Operations Manager, the Hydrographer/Surveyor performs a variety of tasks related to reporting and general survey support for the Remote Sensing Technology Group. The primary role of this position is to provide land, dredging, and hydrographic surveying, including mapping and positioning.

This position will be based out of one of Ballard's regional offices in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Florida, California or Washington.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Determine position and elevation of important features and boundaries in survey areas using precision hydrographic systems, GPS technologies, total stations, and levelling instruments

  • Setup, Calibration and troubleshooting of dredge positioning, land and hydrographic survey systems

  • Ability to hook up, drive/tow, launch and recovery survey vessels.

  • Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their precision

  • Perform field hydrographic surveys collecting bathymetric and other data

  • Post process field data, compute quantities, create charts, and reports

  • Reporting of bathymetric conditions, quantities and other pertinent data to colleagues and supervisors for review and direction

  • Collect, assemble, review and report production related materials and values

  • Verify the precision of survey data including measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites

  • Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys

  • Coordinate, manage and conduct field operations

  • Train field staff, and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys

  • Analyze survey objectives and specifications to prepare proposals or to direct others in proposal preparation

  • Develop criteria for the design and modification of survey instruments

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • 1 to 5 years’ experience working in a similar role within the hydrographic industry

  • 3 years’ experience with multibeam and singlebeam data processing and collection

  • Proficient with conventional survey tools, GPS equipment, and hydrographic equipment

  • Working knowledge of Windows-based programs, as well as hydrographic data acquisition software, including Hypack

  • Proficient in AutoCad

  • Familiar with NOAA and USACE specifications for hydrographic surveys

  • The ability to travel to project assignments around the country

  • Must be able to operate and performance maintenance on small vessels (less than 30 feet), including the ability to tow, launch and recover vessels

  • The ability to work successfully as a team member

  • Must be proficient in the use of TI/sensor integration, with the ability to adapt to general electronic software

  • Must be willing to relocate to the Neenah, Wisconsin area

  • Maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Education & Certifications:

  • S. in Surveying and Mapping, Engineering, or similar curriculum preferred

  • Professional state license and/or nationally recognized hydrographic certification preferred

  • Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) preferred

  • Commercial Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain preferred

Physical Demands / Working Environment:

  • Ability to remain outdoors for long periods of time in various seasons and conditions

  • Work will take place around water; working on small vessels and barges off and near shore; including near or on moving and vibrating equipment

  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, walk and stand on uneven surfaces, ride or work from a barge, pier, vessel, etc.

  • Ability to sit, stand, kneel, squat, push, pull, etc. for varying amounts of time

  • Ability to lift and carry 50 to 100 pounds for short distances

  • Ability to wear personal protective clothing and equipment including, but not limited to, respirators and fall protection

  • Workdays may consist of 12+ hours a day, including nights and weekends depending on project schedule needs
