The Position
Compliance Investigators perform investigations regarding violations of federal and/or State laws or regulations pertaining to a specific State program or regulatory area such as public assistance, real estate, insurance, employment discrimination or sexual harassment. The investigative process is initiated following a formal complaint or suspected violation utilizing standard investigative techniques. Incumbents are not sworn peace officers, and enforcement actions are limited to the specific program or regulatory area and involve informal resolution and/or recommendations for administrative sanctions or penalties which are imposed by a higher authority.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. The Labor Commissioner strives to ensure that all workers are treated fairly under the law. The office investigates complaints of non-payment of wages, State minimum wages, overtime, and prevailing wage disputes.
The office also monitors youth employment standards including work hours and safe, non-hazardous working conditions. Compliance/Audit Investigator 1 must have the ability to analyze statutes enforced by the Labor Commissioner's Office; analyze rules and regulations and apply to investigative or audit findings; make oral group presentations to provide information and explain procedures, policies, and laws pertaining to the program area; read and interpret contracts and legal documents in relation to the program area; review and analyze information received from businesses, complainant and governmental agencies; conduct interviews both in person and by phone to ascertain factual information; mediate and negotiate resolution between contending parties. The investigator performs independent investigations and audits with minimal supervision; makes independent judgments and recommendations; plans and organizes workload; develops cooperative working relationships with staff members as well as State, federal and local agencies; has an excellent working knowledge of Excel and Word programs. Incumbents may be required to use personal vehicle to conduct State business. To Qualify:
In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, political science, psychology, social work, business administration or closely related field; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and two years of experience where standard investigative techniques were utilized to make program compliance determinations and prepare detailed reports for the purpose of justifying administrative sanctions, penalties or criminal prosecution. Work experience may be obtained in law enforcement, investigative, regulatory or compliance setting; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.Special Requirements
A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Travel up to 25%.The Examination
