This position is located in Iberia.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is responsible for managing and protecting the state’s renewable natural resources, including all wildlife and aquatic life.

LDWF supports a strong work ethic in its employees and incorporates the use of good science, accurate information and technology. The Office of the Secretary exists to provide leadership and support services, administrative direction, and accountability for departmental programs; administrative direction and leadership to ensure the success of subordinate programs; and department-wide coordination, communication, personnel and basic resources needed to accomplish the department’s mission.

This position is located within the Enforcement Division of the Office of the Secretary.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Five years of experience in wildlife conservation law enforcement in the Enforcement Division of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. One year of this experience must have been as a Wildlife Enforcement Corporal or higher rank in state service.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.

Active Police Officers Standard of Training (POST) certification and current annual training requirements.

Qualified to be an ex officio notary public.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by the State and Federal laws is granted.

NOTE:

This job has special physical requirements in that the incumbent must lift heavy objects (50 lbs. or more), walk long distances, work in harsh weather conditions, fire handguns, rifles, and shotguns accurately and have the ability to operate vehicles, boats, and all-terrain vehicles while in the performance of duties.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To direct and participate in investigative and law enforcement activities through supervision of professional enforcement personnel engaged in a variety of enforcement activities associated with fisheries, wildlife, boating and search/rescue activities in an assigned district or for a statewide specialized enforcement unit.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General from a Wildlife Enforcement Captain or higher-level wildlife enforcement personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Direct line over Wildlife Enforcement Sergeants and/or assigned enforcement personnel of lower rank.

LOCATION OF WORK:

Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Law Enforcement Division.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Wildlife Enforcement Sergeant by the presence of supervisory responsibilities.

Differs from Wildlife Enforcement Captain by the absence of responsibility for the management of an enforcement region or a statewide specialized operational/patrol or statewide administrative enforcement support service program.

Examples of Work

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Supervises personnel engaged in the investigation and enforcement of all laws, rules, and regulations as delegated to the department and commission.

Serves as an on-scene coordinator solving technical problems related to the handling/seizure of enforcement evidence.

Reviews all field-generated reports on law enforcement activities for correctness.

Conducts internal investigations of offenses or alleged offenses committed by a subordinate agent. Prepares necessary reports and make recommendations for disciplinary action to the Wildlife Enforcement Captain.

Coordinates and assists with technical cases and search/rescue missions.

Conducts written inspections of all district equipment maintenance including patrol vehicles, boats, trailers, all terrain vehicles and all other equipment issued to personnel under their respective command.

Investigates fleet accidents.

Serves as the Wildlife Enforcement Captain in their absence.

Coordinates with local, state, and federal law enforcement to plan and to execute high-risk enforcement actions.

Serves as a liaison with state and federal court prosecutors under their respective jurisdictions by interpreting and answering technical issues related to fish, wildlife, and boating enforcement.

Supervises investigations involving fatalities resulting from boating or hunting accidents.

Supervises the securing of areas impacted by natural/manmade disasters and civil disturbances.

Supervises and coordinates the removal of injured persons and the removal of vessels involved in crashes or other incidents.
