Job Description

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.

Reporting to the Deputy Commissioner for Strategic Initiatives, the Executive Director for Policy & Planning will assist in managing DSNY’s policy and strategic initiatives portfolio, which includes, but is not limited to the Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability, Bureau of Commercial Waste, and the Technical Assistance and Training Unit.

The responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Deputy Commissioner in the development and rollout of the agency’s major public initiatives.

  • Manage the agency’s policy and strategic initiatives portfolio including developing new programs to meet the agency’s goals and objectives.

  • Support the Deputy Commissioner in the day-to-day management of the various bureau’s divisions and programs.

  • Manage the creation and delivery of published reports from the bureau to ensure they align with the agency’s strategic goals.

  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Deputy Commissioner and executive team to effectively promote the agency’s priorities to critical stakeholders to achieve the desired outcomes.

  • Coordinate across the agency and with external agencies to implement and execute strategic programs.

Qualifications

  1. Graduation from an accredited college with a Baccalaureate degree plus specialized training in public management and evaluation.
