Guardian Life Private Placements Associate in New York, New York

The Private Placements Associate provides support to the Private Placement team through various quantitative and qualitative analyses, as well as document preparation and evaluation for both new transaction opportunities and portfolio monitoring, principally for the corporate investment grade private placement universe. In partnership with and under the direct supervision of more senior staff, the Private Placement Analyst will help evaluate new investments, participate in other portfolio management activities, and make recommendations.

You will

Perform analyses for the underwriting of potential new investment opportunities: Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses to assist senior staff in the evaluation of potential private placement debt opportunities, most of which will be investment grade. In the process, analyze company and industry data and, with the assistance of the law department, assess document issues. Assist more senior staff in preparing reports recommending whether or not a potential transaction provides a combination of credit strength, yield, and covenant protection that will support Guardian’s goals for its various business divisions. For successful transactions, assist in required documentation and processing.

Manage existing investments in private placement debt : Assist more senior staff in active management and surveillance of a portfolio of private placement debt investments. Stay up to date on credit developments. Prepare periodic reports assessing performance and credit quality. Help more senior staff to assess amendments and other document changes requested from time to time by borrowers.

Ad hoc projects : All investment professionals are encouraged to suggest improvements to current processes; sometimes this will entail working to implement the improvements. In addition, private placement professionals are asked from time to evaluate projects or work on adjacent investment matters of all sorts. Implement a disciplined and methodical approach to ensure management of several projects at the same time. Contribute to the overall success of the team.

You have

  • Up to two years of experience in a financial services organization in evaluating private placement investment opportunities.

  • Some understanding of economics, finance, and accounting is essential.

  • Strong knowledge of financial principles and concepts underlying the underwriting and evaluation of private placement debt investments.

  • Quantitative skills and ability to apply these skills in deal analysis and portfolio maintenance.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to compose emails (internal & external) that are professional and unambiguous, summarize sophisticated or unwieldy information, listen carefully and take notes where appropriate, and provide responsive answers to questions.

  • The willingness to ask for help from colleagues, and provide help to colleagues, when priorities collide.

Salary Range

$88,000- $150,000

The salary range reflected above is a good faith estimate of base pay for the primary location of the position. The salary for this position ultimately will be determined based on the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. In addition to salary, this role may also be eligible for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation.
