The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York Staff Associate I in New York, New York

The laboratory of Dr. Stephen Goff in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Columbia University Medical Center is seeking a Staff Associate I to be responsible for a wide range of tasks for the laboratory. The Staff Associate I will operate and maintain equipment,order reagents for all laboratory members, and organize stocks and supplies as they arrive. They will maintain lab stocks of reagents, culture media, and Liquid N2 cell line banks. The employee will place lab orders and arrange for our laboratory meetings. As a Staff Associate, they will also be responsible for assisting and supporting all the laboratory's daily operations.

Specific responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Functional Knowledge:

The candidate must understand the lab's approach to creating mutations in cloned DNA copies of viral genomes and determining their effects on virus replication. She must also have the required knowledge and familiarity with the equipment and methods to contribute to the lab's success.

Problem-Solving:

The candidate must be able to solve problems for all the group members in the lab, including fixing equipment and maintaining shared stocks and reagent preparations.

Decision Making/Autonomy:

They will operate with considerable autonomy and must know their duties and execute them without the need for frequent oversight.

Technical expertise:

To ensure the lab operates successfully, the candidate must be very familiar with its techniques and equipment.

Communication:

The candidate will play a very important role in communicating with all members of the group, keeping everyone informed about meetings, and starting up our group meetings.


Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a biological subject, such as microbiology or biochemistry.

Specific skills and/or knowledge required for the position.

Computer skills, Microsoft word, excel, etc.

Preferred Requirements:

4 years experience preferred
